CONFESSIONS
Not all of our contributors did
so well. Thero were some who
took advantage of our Invitation to
enjoy the self-mortification of ex
iiRgorutlng their own 'faults.
Othors, especially girls, told us of
following tholr Impulses recklessly
Into tho face of danger: but when
danger turned into trouble and
u n h a pplness, they whimpered.
Sometimes a single phrase In an
otherwise dull manuscript revealed
the situation. "I used to torment
my folks something awful. And
now I am sorry but glad for the
I'xporience."
Others achieved an occasional
simplicity that would have done
credit to any writer. "My child
hood," one girl wrote, "was hard
an both me and my parents." Or:
"I was young and beautiful, but
1 was stupid." On rare occasions
a contributor actually manipulated
his language. Ono imaginative
youth wrote: "My father was a
fnrmer but loved nature so much
that he wouldn't ruin her with a
Mow. . So we were always vory
poor."
When our writers, like more
sophisticated ones, did pretend
before tho world, it was in such
obvious ways that there was no
mistaking It. They knew little of
the subtle pretense that an artlfi.
rial culture develops;; what they
wanted us to believe was merely
that they were beautiful, or that
they had rich friends, or that they
were respected by their neighbors.
"I was very beautiful" appeared
so oft that it seemed to have
become a stock phrase. And the
more nearly Illiterate the manu
script, the more often I stumbled
nn such claims as: "I also have
nnd use the best manners," or,
Three butlers met in at the door."

Now it is unfortunately true that
a good many holy frights are of
the gentle sex. Yes, and some of
them would be knockouts if they
only had a dozen pounds of pad
ding, just a scant dozen pounds.
Well, not every one of them, but
not a few of them can get it in a
month or so if they wish. Any
good doctor anywhere can give the
insulin injections or the doctor
can instruct an intelligent patient
how to tako them herself. Insulin
Is good only for an hour or two,
and so it must be Injected at about
the time of the meal if ft is .to
enable the patient to utilize the
earhohydrate.

less than a pound a week. Then
for three more weeks each received
a dose of insulin with each meal,
and on the diet plus insulin ea-h
gained two and a half pounds a
week, on the average. One patient
who had insulin, gained 11 pounds

This last point is important. If
a holy fright has tho makings of
a lovtfly lady In her, Insulin is all
the more likely to bring out her
better traits. I do not mean that
this is the criterion for selecting
cases suitable for the Insulin treat
ment, though I do think a holy
flight who is a little bit of nil
right In the temperament Is pretty
certain to acquire the saving 12
pounds ot flesh In this way, that
is. if she can find a doctor who
knows his insulin.
Insulin can do harm If uninten

do no harm and may put many a

I am quite sincere about this.
In fact I am tempted to open a
