It was also due in no small degree to the neutral ity of the Republican press in dis cussing his candidacy. The Portland Journal declares the primary result "A voice from the foundations. The folks on the mudsills of Republicanism have nominated Mr.. Joseph a: their governor" which is prob ably correct for If there ever wai a mud-slinging candidate who np penled to the mudsills, it Is' Mr. Joseph yet his vote was only IS per cent of his party. Mr. Joseph's nomination is also heralded as a "vindication" of the disbarment verdict rendered by the circuit judges on chnrges of un ethical conduct preferred by the bar association charges still pend ing before tho supreme court. If this popular appeal was not de signed along typical Joseph lines to influence and intimidate the court in its consideration of a case pending before It just ns his character assasHluntion tactics that got him into trouble were, then we do not know what contempt of court means. Tho result might also bo construed as a minority vote In ravor of free nnd unlim ited abuse and slander of our highest officials. But the law re mains the law nnd not public hys teria. Tho Oregoninn gives every indi cation of luke-warmly supporting the nominee party label Is so much more sacred than principle with such partisan organs despite the fact that Mr. Joseph Is Repub lican by label only. Yet wo doubt whether tho rank nnd file will be similarly loyal.
