While the hundreds of employes
of the Al fl, Barnes circus, which
played bore yesterday and depart
ed late last night for Koseburg In
which city It Is showing today,
lived on the circus trains nml ate
on the circus train diners or in
the mess ,ent, nevertheless they
spent much money in Medford, as
did also the management.
This was due to the fact that
last Saturday night was pay day .
for the circus, which played Klam
ath Falls that day. and Montague,
Oil., Sunday, and consequently the
employes whu were flush with
money had no place to spend it
until Medford was reached.
As soon as they could get off
duty, especially the performers,
they flooded the stores on shop
ping expeditions making purchases
of various kinds, and many of
them sent money to their homes
In various parts of the United
States and even foreign countries,
visiting the postofflco and pur
chasing money orders for this pur
pose. Some very large sums were sent
out from tho oily in tills way. I
Among tho performers sending i
money home or to former humes i
abroad were the Grent Gretonos.
the young group of high wire per- I
formers givlne the suner-feuture
act of the circus, which is one
of the best and most hazardous !
acts ever seen will, any circus at
traction. Tho midget performers
were also nmong those sending
money away ,0 their homes.
, nen 100, much money was 1
spent In the eily In purchasing
meat, groceries and other food for
tne menagerie, and the circus
mess tent, and outside hot dog and
other refreshment stands, hay for
the many horses and other nni
mals, anil for various needed sun
dries. The circus management, too,
paid into the city treasury $100 for
the license to show In Medford for
the one day.
Therefore In spite of the fnct
that tho hotels and restaurants ob
tained no direct patronage from
tho circus, the latter left consider
able money In town.
