SALEM, Oregon, May 19. (P)
Exorbitant uttorncy feoa, over pay

sextons are eating up tho estates of
persons who die in Oregon without
leaving- heirs, and whoso estate are
supposed to escheat to the stato,
according to a statement made
public by State Treasurer Kay.
- The monies so acqqulred by the
state goes ' into the irreducible
school fund. Chargen' of raiding
that fund are hurled by the state
treasurer. He severely criticizes
county courts also, declaring they
are too free In allowing claims
against these estates, chiefly legal
and burial claims. Unless the
pracfico Is stopped Kay says, that
as a member of tho state land
board, which administers the Irre
ducible school fund, ho will de
mand Investigation . of final ac
counts. Most of the estates are small and
consist of cash or its equivalent.
He cites one estate of 91242.74.
Tho state got none of it for 10
years, and then only $181.15. An
other dwindled from $2225.29 to
$7ii0.79. Another decedent left
$3563.37 In Portland banks. There
were no debts. Yet, by tho time It
reached the school fund, it had
shriveled to $11189.98.

GOLD FROM HILLS
A number of prospectors in the
hills surrounding Medford are said
I to be earning as high as a dollar
per hour when panning for gold,
but others havo been less fortu

any gold for their hard labor.
Quito a number of miners In
the woods above Jacksonville have
been patiently panning all winter,
finding nothing on some days and
making' fairly good finds of the

Kood wages for the time and effort

Several young men nre plan
