The study was made by Dr. Mil ton N. Nelson, agricultural econ omist of the. experiment station, and u former assistant, W. l. Rel den. Tho results have now been prepared for publication and will 1)0 issued soon in bulletin form. Tho Oroifon prune (has been recoKnlzed for years as well adapt ed for ciinninK purposes, possess ing excellent quality, larse size and fine flavor derived from its tart-swuet nature, the study re vealed. No major or concerted effort has ever heen made to. push the sale for canning purposes, how ever, with the result that most consumers never heard of them and retailers find turnover slow. This in turn makes prices hin in spite of the fact that they can be canned at a lower cost than any other comparuhle fruit. At present canning plants take only about 7 per cent of the Northwest production of Italian or Oregon prime production. The annual output of canned prunes is now app'-oxiniately that of Ha waiian canned pineapples or can ned apricots 20 years ago. Since that time production of the form er has Increased Hi fold. If production of canned fresh prunes were to increase 12 fold, ail of the present acreage of Ital ian prunes would be required for canning purposes. Closer cooper ation among canning firms, con certed advertising and sales pro motion and more attractive no menciauture are recommended as first steps needed in stimulating the Industry throughout the state of Oregon and the Pacific North west. i(MrM Oy 4HA ommii wui , , Math fiUMt v4 pmnvi ViDhnio Court Kstate J. .1. L. J. Tabor, master of the Na tional Orange, said in presenting the new farm Issue that the prob lem is not alone one of marketing bonds, but of preventing real es tate find frozen assets from crippl ing the loaning efficiency of tho banks. "When Interest rates are snar ing,' he said, "It is impossible to market farm loan bonds. Other proposed amendments would make It possible for ex penses of the federal farm loan board to be met in the snme man ner as those of the federal reserve board are met. define more clearly what constitutes a farm unit, and permit a greater spread than one per cent on certain classes of loan', the excess to go to a reserve fund for the purpose of stabilizing in terest rates. The first of those latter propo sals, the farm groups say, would relievo the banks of considerable expense and enable them to in crease their service to farmers. The second, they say. would of benefit to the operators of small farms in poultry and truck terri tory and farms under intense cul tivation which now, no matter how hltth their value, cannot obtain satisfactory loans.
