A RIPE OLD AGE

Mrs. Mary M. Putnam, mother of
George Putnum, publisher of the
Capital-Journal and Arthur Put
nam, the California sculptor, died
at the family residence In thiH city
this morning, aged 85. She was born
at Charleston, Vermont, was mar
ried at St; Johnsbury in 1870 to
Oram el H. Putnam, a Civil war
veterun, going to New Orleans
where her children were born.
. After her husband's death In
San Fruneisco in 1880 sho resided
In Omaha, Nebrasa, returning to
California In 18!2, residing in San
Diego and Han Francisco.. For the
past 25 years she has been a resi
dent of Medford and Salem, Ore
gon. BesideH her two sons, she is
survived by a daughter, Kllzabeth
Putnam of Salem and two grund
children; Mrs. M. K. V. Howe of
New Orleans, and George Storey
Putnam of Oakland, Cal. The
funeral will be held Thursday.
For over ten years Mrs. Putnam
made her home In Medford with
her two children George und Eliza
beth, the former being the editor
of. the Mail Tribune. Mrs. Put
nam's death. will be mourned by a
host of friends in Medford and
southern Oregon, parti c u larly
among tho older residents, who
recognized her as the finest exam
ple of that fast disappearing type
the pioneer mother.
Left a widow ten years after
her marriage, with three young
children, she attacked her problem
with the most gallant courage, and
by hard work and uncompluinlng
sacrifice gave her family the best
education availublo, and as u result
her eldest son George, was at an
early ago able to ussuine the
double role of helpful son and
family .provider;' lier; next ' son,
Arthur, became one of tho most
distinguished animal sculptors - In
the country, while the daughter,
Kllzabeth, while in Medford, -look
a leading part In nil the progres
sive activities of ; the. community,

Kagle Point, Ore., on Wednesday
morning May 14, after a very brief
illness. Deceased wan born in I n
Ion county, Kentucky, April 15,
1850. He resided In Kansas City,
Mo., for 25 years and where he was
engaged in the nursery business.
He came to KaiUo Point two and a
half years ago to make his home
with his daughter, lie Is survived
by two, causers, .Mrs. Walter
W'eygant of Fort Worth, Texas, and
Mrs. VV. C. Clements of Kagle
Point; also six grand children and
one brother, Ross Spalding, of Id
ion county, Kentucky.
Funeral services will be held at
the Catholic church Friday morn
ing at 9 o'clock, Hev. Father
Meagher officiating. Interment in
Medford cemetery. Mineral ar
rangements in charge of the Perl

pert, was Informed here this fore

Illver valley that night, he said,
but the arrival of clouds made It

to smudge.
While a big share of the frost
danger Is over for the season there
Is still sufficient danger to kcop
orchardists awako at night when
cold weather threatens, Mr. Young
says. Last year oil was burned
until May 28.
