It has no irrigation or proper drainage system, whiL" j Jackson Counly has the first, and is prcparhij; to seeure the! sreond. In other words, Medford is in a far better position to have a liirjre and successful cannery than Ilillsboro, yet while there are two canneries in this section, both of them are small com pared to Hie Ilillsboro cannery and neither are prow in k as rap idly, or enjoyini; the profits of the Washington Comity nrf-'ani- WHY is this? There seems to he one obvious answer, local financial simnort. ' A few years iil'O the Ilillsboro can nery was oh the verpe of bankruptcy with an $S0,(K)l) debt. I'orlland is a near neighbor, hut Toi-thind would (five no sup f.ort. The situation was critical. " At this juncture lid ward Sehuliuerich, state senator and president of the Commercial National liank of Ilillsboro, stepped in. lie loaned money to the cannery; if our information is cor rect, he backed his faith in the cannery, life ability of the man agement, as well as in the ability of the ranchers to furnish the produce, to the extent of approximately $125,000.' Last year not only did the cannery take the local product--, but it sent down to Medford for pears, paid the freight to the S. P. and from $-10,000 to $1)0,000 in cash to local pear growers. NOT only has the llilltsboro cannery made money, but the Ilillsboro bank lias made money also, and the entire com munity has been benefitted tremendously. ' ' ' The iiicstion naturally arises, why can't Medford do whai Ilillsboro has done in fact, why can't Mx-iU'ord, with its su perior resources and facilities, do even 'more? There may be Important differences between the' two com munities of which we are not aware. Hut we believe the matter is of sufficient importance to Jackson county to justify the Chamber of Commerce in making a careful study of the Ilills boro situation, and determining what those differences are, if any exist. Those differences determined, there is evcr.v reason to he lievc they coiild be satisfactorily adjusted. We don't believe there is anything that would do more to increase local prosperity and render it more jiermanent than the establishment of a l-jryc and successful canning industry, in this district. puper for a wife.
