THE COURT HOUSE AND MEDFORD 'S RESPONSIBILITY An effort Is being made in Medford to throw out a smoke screen to becloud., the. Issues back of the ciuestluu pf which Bite shull be approved for the new Jackson County court houBe. A lot of legal questions are being injected Into the campaign and apparently It is being considered to titlto an extent as merely a Medford problem. If there are any problems that will make it difficult for Medford, they should have been considered long ago. The city of .Medford offered ti(3)irnih a site which was satis factory to tho KNTIltl'I COUNTY and the county will naturally expect them to do this. Two sites have been proposed and the voters of the county will on .May 16 make their choice of these two sites. And 6 will be up tgj.Medford to furnish the Bite which the voters choo:0 whether it will require a bond issue or whatnot. There are always ph ftv of persons anil agencies who always wult until the lust minute and then start slinging mud In order to stir up strife and confuse the Ibsuo. It will he too bad if .Medford bus made an error O proposing this or that site. And It wiU.be up to Medford to uxtricate itself from the mess II' such occuW. Ashland Tidings. O 0T HIS fill Ik nltcnliiiii to it very house iiui'slioii wliieli q liy inn ny lTsidentH, mill will who eiinie here imcr Ihi' county .scut wiis moved to this city. OTlic city of MimU'oi-iI promised the people of Ashland nnd Jackson County Hint if the county seat were moved here, Med ford would supply n satisfactory site free of cost. Thisvns a very important part of the nrifrinal aiireoiiieul, and it is no eMi.'eratiiin to say that it was chiefly respnusililir for the sue cessOif he camnainii to have the county scat removed from liicksoiivillelo this city. TIIK (ueslion immediately iirosV as to what was a ''sal isl'ae tory.site." .end ii was at the institution of Ashland that a mcctinc; was called in Medford, attended hy n'prcsentiitivi.'S from thai, city and t his, to determine this point. ' "At, this incetini; i' was suf:'esled Hint the decision lie left to the Comity Court, it licinn urged tljTis neither city was rep resented in this body, thiTI the court, did repren-nt the county as a whole, and the court luuise wws to be built for no single fac tion of the comity, HUT Kf. II.KKKITI'ON the city prseMted the Ctmnty Court with a' ntimlier of prospective sites from which thev were to make their choice. The Washington Mchmil, City J'tirk, and Armory sites were included, as were several other sites. For several months the County Court not only studied these sites, but, other sites which were not presented by the city, and after the most, careful study, and detailed investigation, unanimously selected the Washington School Kite. This was supposed, and naturally supposed, to end the mat ter. Not only Ashland, but every other section of the county, assumed that the agreement leaving the decision of a site to the County Court would be lived up to that the people of Medford, having secured the county seat, would fulfill its pledge' which was largely responsible for this decision. ' ; . 1 ' OUT unfortunately this supposition was not correct. The " agreement had lleeu entereil into, bill it was discovered that there was a legal loophole. The law provided that if n certain small percentage of voters should not approve of the County Court's selection, they could demand an election, and final decision bo left to the voters of the county. In other words, while Medford was morally bound lo leave the decision to the County Court, if ws not IkiiiiwI le gally; and we believe Ashlund will realize that, unfortunate as the situation is, with the demand for such an election proiicrly Hindi!, there was no way for Medford to escape it. On the other hand, with the facts as they are, we are mire the people of Medford will realize why the people of Ashland feel, as indiealed in the editorial quoted above. They naturally h4l MierlfoawJ morally rrfH.siUlp to carry out Ihe .agreement (!rwially i4wl iw, J the refusal to do this, even though tcicilly atvn4MibW, thtr regard as aniluilly a breach of faith. j??Wt vinM fl Viliiii't, means when it refers to "syiokf V iWiJing the issue und mud slinging." If there were ay way to get out oPihe nies. to return and uphold the County Court selection, we would do everything in our power to bring it about. 0llul, as we,ij( said before, there is no way. And, as the Tidings has said, Medford agreed to furnish the site, the Cyunty Court selected. O O ' A vote for the Washington School sitcT therefore, not only means voting for the bcstgjie; it means servinff notice on the rest of Jackson County that when MMford promises a thg, even though that pQinise is a gentleman's agreement nnd not legally binding, the people of Medford will insist upon that l.ro((isc being carried out.
