pHOM what we can learn of the Elks dance enibroulio. it whs
plainly due to a iitisuiulerstaiKlin. and sslioii.d be quickly
and it mien My settled,
j , Informed that the 'ew Year's eve affair was a public dance,
the, City Council directed Mrs. Itarto, tho matron, to attend it,
in the line of her regular duties covering public dances.
Mrs. liarto, however, was denied admittance, officials of the
Klks explaining the dance in question was not public, but pri
vate, open only 1o members and their invited guests.
This must be true. The Klks is not only a private club, it is
in Medford equivalent to a city club, its membership comprisinu
representative business and professional men of the entire city.
Obviously, the duty of a dance matron should no) extend to
the social affairs of such an nrgaiiixut ion, any more than to lli"
social affairs of one or more private individuals.
;
'I'll K fact that admission is charged to a dance docs not make
that dance a public, one. Subscription dances are frequently
given, where the expenses are cow ret I by a per capita charge,
but dance matrons do not attend them and SIIOI'1,1) not attend
them. The duties of a dance matron only extend to those public
paid dances, oprn to any individual who cures to purchase ;i
ticket. . -
With the character of the Klks social affairs thus understood
there should be no trouble in the future. There would liavr
been no Irouhh' at I he outset if mailers had been hilly explained.
X7i' live hcMi urged , by certain individuals, indignant over
" the New Year's eve incident, to advocate the removal of
t ho port of dance matron as a nuisance and an example of the
ciy government meddling in affairs which are not its concern.
' AVe do not share this point of view. Some control mid su
pervision of puhlic dances in the cily we regard as necessary
and desirable. To do this a dance matron is needed.
Fai' belter to retain the dance matron, and give the regu
latory system ft thorough trying out, instead of jumping to tin;
conclusion it is a failure simply because initial mistakes may
have In, n made, and a misunderstanding created.
With the distinction bet ween public daiycs and pri.vale
dances clearly understood, we see no reason why there should
be any trouble, or serious friction, in the future.
jfT simply can't be done. ,And until these Kast-West games are

superiority. And it the Trojans had beaten I'lUsburg in the
Kast, the same superiority would have been demonstrated, v
Hut on its Kastern trip Southern California was not only,
beaten by Notre Dame, hut ati'ording to all football, experts,
the game showed the latter team to bo two touchdowns better.
Now Pittsburgh, rated equal to Notre Dame and by some
well-known coaches better, ii; beat-.n 41 to 14, and shut out 82-0
after a little over two quarters.
True, the weather can't explain all of thai.;. Hut that would
not be as unreasonable, in our opinion, as to claim the weather
had nothing to do with it. An athlete doesn't have to stagger
wilh bis tongue hanging out to be affected by u sudden change
of climate. Jt is a matter of condition. : And, when a man like
('ansa, in the clear, is caught from behind, it doesn't suggest
good or even fair condition.' ,
