Radio Program KMED Mall Trlbune-Vlroln Station Of the forty additional radio range beacons transmitters that were recently ordered by tho gov ernment, one will be ready for in stallation at Medford in a short time. The transmitters have been found to he of great benefit in re ducing the delayed and interrupted schedules of tho air-mail planes by more than 30 per cent. The record of safety, on tho Cleveland-New York airway Is pointed out u be ing even more gratifying. The radio range beacon system has now been Installed nnd extend ed west on the trans-continental airway as far as Omaha. The ('hictigo-Hoston beacons will go on the air within the next few weeks. The system has the ndvantage of serving tdlots throughout the 24 hour doy and unlike lighted aids to navigation, are not affected by "thick" weather. The most important feature, of this type of beacon Is in serving as a homing device, making it possi ble to fly to the exact location of the beacon and thereby locating the landing field. 1'sed Willi Hiuliophouo The radio range beacon Is oper ated 1n ' conjunction with radiotelephone- stations. It Is stopped every 15 minutes and identified by stntlon announcement, followed by correct time and weather reports; then, on completion of the broad cast, the operation of tho beacon is resumed. This system has a number of advantages in that the pilot does not have to change the tuning of his receiver and is listen ing at all times for either radio range-beacon signals or weather broadcasts. In this way it Is possi ble to Interrupt the beacon at any time and communicate emergency messages to the pilot In flight.
