A MOMENTOUS DECISION
TUK order of tlic Iiitcrsliite (,'oniiiii'iec Commission c-ouipcll-in
Hie I'liiou I'ncifin lo coiistruci u riiili'oiiil line from
Crescent, Oi-c-'on, In Crime is uniloiililcilly the nmst inipni nun
ailroad decision that has been
the Pacific Coast. If sustained by the Supreme Court, it will
revolutionize the railroad policy of this country and stimulate
the development of this state in sensational fashion. ,
That Oregon sorely needs suel) an Kast-West connect ion, no
fair-minded person can deny, nor can it be denied the outcome,
is a smashiii'' vjctorv for the Oregon Public Service Co is-
.
lolC tile eillllllUSSIOII.
The decision was not unanimous, l'lidcr the circumstances
this is' more than could be expected. For while the llioory of
eoiiipelliiiK a railroad to build iitfainst its will, where such con
struction is regarded as a mutter of public necessity, is' not
new this, we believe, this is the first time, in this country, the
theory has been carried onl in practice.
TIIK opposition will once more raise the famiiiiir cry of the
'government meddliiij.' in business. If tfoveriiincnt control
and direction of public ullities is "mcddlini;," then we have
had it for half a century, and, whether we like it or not, will
have it, for half n century to come.
And the theory upon which such control is based is uiunics
tionably sound. For the alternative to bavin;; what the hard
shell individualist likes to call "government nr.dilliii", " in l!i
Uusiness, is to have our government controlled HV U'm P.usi
ness. There is no middle ground. This must be a government "of
the people, by the people and for the people, " or it will be a
government, of Hig Business, by Itig lousiness ami for l!ig Busi
ness. What is best for the people as a whole, must be our guid
ing principle, or what is Desi tor nig isusiness w uu ue.
LOOSK thinkers like to call this socialism. Put il isn't. It is
practical Democracy, the retention of power in the hands
of the people, rather than the
economic dictatorship. It is public control, which is popular
government ; not puMic ownership and operation, which is socialism.
I
F this decision is upheld, and i(i!),(l()(,t))0 spent, for the Crane
Crescent connection, it will not only .stimulate develop nt
in Kastcrn Oregon, but throughout the state, and incidentally
rentier an eastern railroad connection for Medford and Southern
Oregon practically certain. Crescent is only about ''.") miles
north of the Fish Lake pass with an eastern rail connection at
the former place. A hook-up with the latter should follow as
a matter of course.
This ruling by the I. C. C. also strengthens the belief that
the Hill lines will be allowed to connect the gap in their sys-t
I cm between Northern California and Southern Oregon.
So, all in all, the decision is a very momentous one for Med
ford and Jackson County, us well as for the entire state. It
promises to do more for the development of Oregon than any
ruling that has been made in the recent history of this state.

common to all newspapers) but that such ii presumably well-
informed and intelligent person should take the trouble to walk
up here, and deliver a brickbat against an editorial that lie ap
parently had never read or, if he did read, certainly didn't
understand net only didn't understand but to which he at
tributed opinions which, after a second reading, he admitted

T is really funny how often this sort of thing happens
in the newspaper business. There must be something about

What the Well Dressed
TIIK point of the editorial was no plain, we didn't think it

Namely: This is a representative fovennnent. One seat in

And the people of that state, not representatives front some
other slates, have the right to confirm or condemn that appoint
ment. They also have the right to decide who shall represent
tiieni, not the .Senator from North Dakota, nor the Senator from
anywhere clue.
There was, and is, no analogy with the Vare case. Vnre was
excluded because the Senate held he hud corrupted the electo
rate and bought his seat. Certainly no such charge can be
brought agai, iist Joe (iriindy, unless his opponents wish to main
tain that b-.; corrupted the (.iovernor of I'sfinsylvania. They
have made no such claim.
'
IM;()M what we can gather from press reports, Senator Nye
opposed Cruiidy becafise he
views on the tariff or his reputation.
What if he doesn't? Jlr. (iriindy doesn't like the tariff
opinions or reputation of the gentleman from North Dakota.
Put does that give him the right to demand his recall?
The people of Pennsylvania have the same right to choose
their representatives that the people of North Dakota have to
choose theirs. For the representative of cither state to challenge
this right except when criminal action or gross irregularities
are charged is to make the objector ridiculous and reduce
Democratic government to mi absurdity.
