' " " ' tt:t)i?6feD 'frtlTL'' TRIBUNE, arfrDFQftfi OTiEC, QY. MONDAY. DECKMHEn' o. 1929. PAGE NINE 4 7 ' Screen Life in Hollywood By ROBBIN COONS HOU.YWOOD-A surt of sweet i though Innocent revenge, like that of which Gary Cooper must enjoy, has been realized by Virginia Bruce, a willowy lady, who, like Cooper, failed to 1 make the "dra matic club" back In school days, but Is now In the movies. Cooper went to Cilnnell college in Iowa, where lie was found want ing when he tried out for the col lege troopers' so ciety. In Holly wood, he's a star. Miss Hiuce never wont to college, but in high school In Fargo, N. D., she, too, essayed dramatics without Virginia Bruce success. Somebody else got the role, leaving Virginia to come to Hollywood with no stage experi ence other than that of the debat ing platform. She arrived with her aunt, in Icndint to enroll in a local univer slly, lint meanwhile she met Di rector William llandine, who told her to try pictures. She worked as nn extra a little while, and recent ly won a lilt which led to a studio .contract. She is soft-spoken, has a good singing vnnco and has play ed and sung in several talkies nl leady "all tiny bits," she depre cates. ' Clothes and Books ' "I'd like In In-come a star, but I don't know that 1 have enough am bition or 'artistic zeal." to achieve that," she says. "The main advan tage, as I see it, would he money enough to buy all the clothes and books I want. Hut then, on tho other hand, to have to walk In a perpetual spotlight,. In public, as. the stars do 1 wouldn't like to do that." At any rate, Virginia ISruce is in pictures, and the old dramatic club back homo can jaugli that off. If your youthful prodlKy at home seotnii to be a jackol-alltrades, sup- poso you try malting nn ncior ot ; him. That's advice from .1. C. Nugent, n proud father ns well as a play wrlKht and actor, who did exactly that with his boy, Elliott.' The Open Door lit other professions, he believes, tho anility to do many tliltiKs de stroys the ability to do any oho thliiK well. Hut actlui; is one "heaven lor the jacks" for "nctlnp; Is tho only profession In the world which encompasses all others," ho says. "You cart't name a single human activity which hasn't found Its way to the stage or screen at some time or other. ' "So when I saw my son. Elliott, much interested in many things and making a specially of none, I shunted him into acting." mauorUd ftv JMftvon CAunty Abitrwt Co. U mirth 8ttt,.i4 pnlrl mmJ i' .'. imtty If.
