I'.. Harris. The friends of Mr. nnd Mrs. itoliert le-rnhardt reuret to loyo them from church and social' cir cles, , 1 nit such is life, and th"y found It best to return to Co- self, or in ihe Ford car? It at Echo Farm, Obadiah would be sure to find it, possibly also In the mead ow, but suppose Aqulla Chase had inadvertently carried it off with him? At that, finding It, the botan ist might suppose tho hired boy had dropped it In his car; anyway he would be sure to give it to Obadiah. ' Oh, it she hadn't been such a fool trying to bring back the empty holster concealed in the folds of the torn, halt sheet she might have noticed that her bag was hanging open on ber arm; In fact, what had possessed her to forget the letter when the object of her visit t6 Echo Farm had been returning Obadiah' property to him? : .' ' A maddening Pain In her Injured ankle as she moved thoughtlessly supplied reason enough for her for getfulness. Surely such a sprain was sufficient excuse! "Hello!" The cheery salutation came from the walk at tho side of the veranda and glancing that way Peggy saw Jim climbing up ar.d over the railing. "Wha's happened?" he de manded, glimpsing the steamer rug thrown over her, and tha alarm in his voire brought tome color to her cheeks. "Are you 111? Hurt?" "Just a sprained ankle." Her heart gave a most unac customed throb as she looked up Into bis steel-blue eyes and caught within them the light that sL.ues ou neither land nor sea. Quivering, she looked away. , ' , Oh, It couldn't be they bad met only a dozen times It was rtdleu--lous, absurd. Conquering her agita tion, she looked up shyly, her cheeks burning. . "Where have you been this long while?" . . , "On m'lady's service." Jim held her baud, refusing to let go ot it. "Brady, the celebrated New Haven lawyer, will handle your case when It comes up at the next term ot court. He said you wer not to worry," smiling in sym pathy as her face lighted with hope. "But how did this happen this sprain?" "I hopped over'your garden wall, with disastrous results." Her spirits were soaring as never before. "Oh, please don't mova the linen," as Jim pushed the and table aside to draw up a chair, and there by nearly knocked the table over. Suppose the linen slipped and ex posed his leather holster? Peggy grew hot all over what would ho think of her? What Insane impulse .had Inspired her to treasure tha holster because it va9 his? "You were at Echo Farm?" be questioned eagerly, "nnd I not there to welcome you homo!" He laughed lightly, happily, her high spirits were contagious. "Well, did Pop greet you properly?" "He wasn't home: only Mr. Chase." Jim's tirotile showed the dogged set to his Jaws, his broad forehead, and clearcut features; in s big. line way, he, why, be was actually handsome! "You don't look In the least Ilka your father," she commented softly. Jim's smile vanished. ' "I resemble my mother, like nil lltcky sons," he said, shortly. "Well,' what fortunate circumstance took; you to see us?" She shook her head. i "It wasn't a hit fortunate," she admitted. "A letter, addressed to Mr. Evans, was put iu my mall box nnd I went to return it and and lost it." she ended lamely. "somewhere." Jim chuckled. "Don't look so grieved Leaning forward be again took her hand. - 1 "It Pop's correspondent doesrif get an answer, he'll wrlto again",. "I hope he won't It was a letter from Comm. Jamleson Sinclair!" The hand holding hers grew rigid. - ..; "How do you know?" And it Peggy had not been look ing at Jim and seen bis lips move, she would not have recognized bis voice It was so boarsa so dis cordant. "From the commander's return address in the lefthand corner." her eyes Bashed with indignation at tljo imputation his words Im plied. "I took back the letter un opened." "Miss Peggy." They rooked up, to behold Julia and the vans' hired boy standing In the doorway of tha living room. Red from embarrassment at his unexpected prominence, the boy ad vanced, '"I seen ye drop this" -holding out tha letter addressed to Obadiah Evans "back yonder and brunged it to ye." "Oh, thanks!" Peggy's charming smllo capti vated the small boy's heart; shyly ha took her Impulsively extended hand, laid the letter on her lap and then bolted past Julia and out ot the house. "Thank heaven!" exclaimed Peggy, thrusting It at him; "you have Sinclair's letter intact." Jim looked first at the cnvelopj and then at her. "Intact." he repeated, scornfully: "I'll say not the envelope is botU open and empty." (Copyright, D. Apulelan mat Co.) OF COLLEGE CIRCUITS ATLANTA.
