MEDFOTJD MATT, Oregon-Made Plane Providing Air Treat for Many Members of the city council, po lice force and other local citizens were guests yesterday of the hreose Aircraft company of Port land in flights over the city in the "City of. Portland," cabin plane which arrived at Medford yesterday, piloted by Major Gil bert Kekerson, The plane was busy today taking up officers of local service clubs a nd American Legion officers in district confer ence at Ashland. For a muniicr of yesterday's passengers, it was their first rid, and they came to earth wonder ing why they had never none up before. The plane, a sister ship of the "Aloha,'' which flew to the Hawaiian islands, piloted by Mar tin Jensen, has room for five pas sengers, seated in comfort on soli upholstery. The plane is powered with a 2 2 5 -horsepower Wright whirlwind motor and has a top speed of over KiO miles and a cruising speed of :0 miles an hour. It can clinii. 1200 feet per minute anil is one of the latest to be manufactured by the company, which now hits L L "Medford Is on the map In hu mane work," declared MrB. F. W. Swauton. manager of the Oregon State Humane society, who arrived In the city this morning as a gilest of the Jackson county society. Ms. Swanton, who. recently attended the national convention of humane so cielies at St. Louis. Mo., said that President Sidney Coleman devoted 15 minutes of the official address at the -conven-tlotvto eulogi.ing this city for Its leadership in humane activity. ' "The humane society is just as necessary, to the city as the gar bage man and other factors consid ered Indlspensihle,' said the exec utive. .Mrs. Swanton explained that, contrary to the belief of many people, the ' humivTie society was concerned more with the preven tion of cruelty and unhuinunltnrtan treatment to children and aged people than animals. Asked how long she had been in terested in the work, Mrs. Swan ton told how, at the age of four yeai, she had become so enraged over.the cruel treatment of a man to his team of horses, she grasped a hatchet . In her two hands and split his foot wide open. She orgunlzed the first humane society in Alaska, In 1900 she said, an organization which Is still In existence. She has been actively engaged In the work In this stale for 22 years and has served In the capacity of general manager for the past 11 years.
