"I'KAC'K COMKTII" A long time ago 1 was told that certain persons unknown to me, being peeved by something printed in the Tribune, planned to pay mo the honor vf a call between sunset and morning. As I had no artil lery In the house except a .SR 8, ft W., and did not wish to seem Inhospitable In tho event of a sur prise party, I Invested In a 20 gauge pump gun a beautiful fowling piece that shoots seven times very promptly and Is sup posed to be the most sccurnte Instrument for small ga,ine as well as close callers. A defense more clearly false and perjured eould scarcely have been iuiiif,'ined. The only (loul)l rediirdint; the result rested upon the assumption that in hos Angeles $:(),0O(l,0O0 could not be convicted. The jury demonstrated it can be. '. So now our multi-millionaire showman faces a penitentiary term of from one to f0 years. J lis wife, convicted of iiinn slaughter, us a result of driving a car while intoxicated, also faces a prison term. Certainly a pretty family picture! Hut why waste, sympathy over such scum as this I'aiitages family represents, or why stress a moral which is so obvious? The best, place for a wife who gets drunk, and kills a husband of a family; and the best, place for a husband who is such an unspeakable beast as Alexander 1'antagcs proved himself to be, in behind the bars. There they can have ample time to reflect upon the error of their ways and plutocracy of ours there are some things money cannot buy; and certain moral responsibilities which even the wealthy can't evade. BKFORK the J'antages drama is closed, however, they may agree "it never rains hut. it pours." Alex started as a bar tender's helper in the Klondike, and a handy man in the under world. Kntcring the music hall business, everything he touched turned to gold; he became a man of wealth, with power that money brings, but he retained the moral code of that under world. Money had done everything for him; he believed he could do anything with money. ' Now it develops that while he sold his vaudeville interests for a sum variously estimated at between ten and twenty mil lions he only received a million deville business has received a staggering perhaps it death blow from the "talkies." l'antages' vaudeville in San Fran cisco has been turned into a movietone house. The circuit in San Francisco has been abandoned eutirelv. Jn another year there maye be no l'antages or Orpheuin vaudeville on the Pa cific Coast. In short, l'antages may find instead of twenty and a property returned to him, which would be worthless, even if be were not in a place where successful administration would be rather Not n very pleasant prospect, reduced the values of life down to a monetary basis, and in less than six months lost between nine and nineteen millions. FOOTBALL PLAYED IN IN view of the recent eharges of "professionalism' in our col leges, it is interesting to observe the reaction from the re cent Slanford-l'. S. C. game at l'alo Alto. "The best team won,' observes I'op Warner, coach of the beaten "White Shirts." "Southern California has one of the finest football teams I have ever seen in action." "Stanford has no alibi," declares the Cardinal captain. "We were lucky to bo beaten by only otic touchdown." . " While" it was a hard-fought game, there was only one penalty for roughness. The Npirit on the field was splendid. Time and again players on one side helped up players on the other, after a scrimmage. On neither side were there serious injuries. The vanquished joined with the victors in songs and cheers after the final spirit. It has been charged that both at Stanford and Southern Cali fornia there are football players who have been, and nrc being, helped financially. No doubt this is true. Hut the point we wish to make is that, while poor boys with good football records may have been given college educations, and thus have become technically guilty of professionalism, there was no evidence of the spirit of professionalism on the football field when these two colleges played. As far as conduct in the game was concerned, no one could distinguish between the player lege by his parents and the player who was being helped by some graduate who was no blood So long as college games are played in the spirit displayed at l'alo Alto last. Saturday, we tlont believe one need worry about professionalism ruining football as one. of our greatest amateur sports. AVhut do yon think of a doctor who tells a nurse caring for n diphtheria patient that it Is nil right for her to visit our homo In the next street if she first washes her hair and changes her dress? She came here about 8:30 In the evening. Our little daughter was asleep and so she didn't see her. But nine days later our daughter came down with diphtheria. Isn't it certain that the n u rse ga ve i t to her? Can diphtheria germs be ea rried hi boo ks or pa per '.' M . 1.. J. Answer. Kven assuming that the nurse was a "carrier" nf the germs in her nose or throat, she did not come within range of your daughter, so it Is not likely that Wet Matches that was the source of your daugh ter's Infection. Jieslds, the incu bation period (time from exposure to beginning of illness): in diph theria is usually le.sH than nine, days. Your daughter was more likely infected through' some suli Kequent contact with a person com ing down with diphtheria or with a "carrier." There is no reason to Imagine tliat diphtheria is ever carried by books, papers, clothing or even hair. It is a respiratory Infection almost invariably; the only expectlon to this being oc casional spread of diphtheria thru the medium of milk contaminated by a person, ill of the disease. Incubation in dlptherfa is usually from two to seven days. lOxerclse for J'ahiful Feet. A long time ago you gave some exercises for the "Poor Oeek "With Painful Feet." I have mislaid the clipping of the article, and now I find my daughter, aged 1 4, has pronated feet and needs the exer cises . . . U. X. :. Answer. Here Is an excellent one suggested by Dr. Alice Get: Sit on the floor with feet out stretched. Place soles together as nearly as possibly without sepa rating the knees. Raise front part of feet strongly, hold while count ln 10. and rest. Repeat this 10 or 15 times, according to strength. Vary this exercise by sitting on low stool, grasping a large rubher ball ! 0 to 12 inches in circumference between the feet, keeping heels to gether. Go through 4he same ex ercise, Fqueezing the ball firmly und dropping it t while relaxing. This seance must lie followed reg ularly, morning, noon nnd night, for a period of at least n month, to get d'-finite benefit. Of course your daughter must not indulge In the freak footwear of fashion. Send a stamped envelope hearing your address nnd ask for advice about proper footwear and the care of the feet.
