Henderson suddenly takes Barbara in his arms and Is making fervent love to her when -Jtay'a voice breaks the quiet. Bar bara maiiacen to' avert a climb be tween the men but when she ana Bay return to their bedroom, a stormy scene ensues. Hay x- ilalns ho has been playing In a ondon orchestra to enrn enough money to pay his gambling debts. Both are desperately unhappy and Rny proposes that they return to New York. Barbara finally assents. , Chnptrr 18 FAMILY. , QKVERAL weeks later Barbara's Undo Henry, otherwise Henry James Vandaveer Landon, -was holding an informal court. He was entitled to do so, tor bo was the oldest and wealthiest member of the Landon family, being several times a millionaire. The others, secretly hoping that some day some portion of his mil lions might come their way, came at his bidding, to flatter,, to cringe, to obey all except Barbara, She defied her Uncle Henry and she loved him. "Barbara!" he exclaimed. "I never thought you'd marry a penni less fellow of no social standing whatsoever! I had thought, until now, that John had done wisely In leaving you In full control of your money. If you had to get married abroad, you might at least have bought a duke or prince when you were about It!" "I don't care to buy a husband, thanks," Barbara retorted furiously, "Great heavens! What else have you done? You can't tell me that you haven't bought this fellow when you pay all bis bills; and honso and feed blm besides. ... I tblnk that you might have cboson one who would bavo brought jnoro credit to the family!" . ' ' Barbara was flaming by this time. "Stop It, Uncle Honry, or I'll hit you." sho rlcd angrily. "You don't understand Ray. He doesn't Intend to live oft me. He's going to work." "At.wliatr'bluntiy. "Why, he's trying to pat somo of his songs across." "Bah!" said ber uncle with In creased vigor. "How far does ho think he'll got at that? Anyhow, what does tio Intend doing In the meantime?" . ::.l'He ho talks of gottlng posi tion, in an orchestra," Barbara con ' ceded reluctantly. , "Do you mean that he Intends to get a Job blowing that abominable sixophono of his?" Mr. Landon fairly shouted. "Fine thing for ub to, have a relative of ours playing In some .cheap jazz band! You . .can't tell me honestly Barbara, that , you think it suitable?" .. ( , No, Barbara had to rontons that v she did not. But be might be per ' suadod into doing something olse, she suggested. Her Undo Henry might place him in bis own of fice. ... i "Hell! don't you think I've thought of that?" the older man demanded Irritably. "I put It up to him the second day you both re turned home. He was In his room flowing on that damned instrument of his nnd Instead ot stopping whon I come In, ho had tho nervo to say, 'Walt a moment, will you? I want to finish working put Utls tune that's running through my head.' "I sat there for somo minutes while he made the most atrocious sounds I've, ever heard. Finally 1 said, 'Shut up, young follow, I haven't time to sit hero nil day listening to you.' Ho put asldo his saxophone at that and said, 'I see you aren't fond of music' Wo didn't seem to hit It oft nftor that. 1 of fered him a Job, but bo told mo firmly that he hadn't any Intercut In stocks and shares and that he Intended to slick lo his profession." "Propostorous!" snld Mrs. Ray mond Hlgglns, a widowed couslu who had expectations. "Absurd! I never heard anything like it," said Mrs. T. Latvrcnlz, who had received a lawyer's loiter from her dressmaker that morning and was wondering how to broach the subject to dear Uncle Honry. "These musical fellows never get anywhere," remarked George Lan don, tbo youngest brother and own er ot a canning factory. "I went through college with one who prac ticed hours a day on his piano and now tho poor goof Isn't . earning one-eighth ot what I am." ,"It ,jBn't necessary tor Ray to make money," Barbara pointed out, "but he's crazy with the notion of being Independent Maybe I could talk him into going In with you, Uncle Henry. At least I can try." "Well, you can tell him my of fer still holds gopd," said Honry James Vandaveer Landon magnani mously, Barbara, being a woman and a very feminine one at that, was caro ful to place Ray at a disadvantage before she even began the argu ment. She picked upon the hour before bedtime, when sho was wont to sit curled on his knees. She had put on her dalntcst negligee, a thing ot chiffon and lace tbat bad no warmth whatsoever unless you could rail a ruffle of ostrich feathers some protection for tho throat a gar ment that intrigued Ray completely because It was so entirely feminine and unqecossary. She perched herself on his knees, as usual, but there was a distrait air about ber and she frowned. Ho saw that something bad up set her and Anally inquired: ' "What's the matter, Barbara?" It took him quite a while to por suade her to tell blm and, when she did, she had the air of conferring a great favor. "You've offended my Uncle Henry." "Do you mean because I refused a place In his office? It was mighty kind ot him, but,, you know, that It Isn't In my line." "But I thought you wanted to he Independent?" He set his teeth grimly. f'You bet I do!" Ho did not add tbat, after threo years of knocking around, bo felt like a fish out of water In this olaborate establishment tbat bis wife maintained. It was absurd but, knowing that In no way did he contribute to Its up.koep, ho Celt that It was an Impertinence on his part even to summon the butler for a glass ot tee water. He halt wanted to apologize lo the man nnd hold tho door open tor him to pass out again. "I trlod out for two orchestras today," he romarked suddonly. She clung closer to him. Ho liked tho perfume on her linlr. "But I don't want you to go Into a stupid old Jazz bund, Ray. I want you to go In with my Undo Henry. Wouldn't you try It for a timo, if only to plenso me?" His arms tightened around Iter while he tried to argue with her gently. "But, I wouldn't be any use In business. I'd mako n fool of my self. Even In college I hadn't any head tor figures." "You could try," she pouted. "You would try If yon loved me." "I do love you, Barbara." "Then If that's the truth you'll stop all this nonsense about play ing In a Jnzs band. You've no Idea how humiliated It makes me feel. My relatives and friends laugh nt II I know they do. And, you muff sco thnt It Is absurd yourself, . ., . I bellovo you'll make ma hato yon, Rny, It you go on being so stub born!" They continued tho nrsumcnl long Into the night and, In ths end, ns sho had on a slmllnr occnslon, sho got her way. liny was at a disadvantage when sho was lying In his arms, her hands carosslng his hair. Besides, he was sulllclently fair-minded ,to ace, In a measure, her point of view. "Very well, Barbara, I'll try It out since you'ro so set on It. Hut, I wnrn you thnt I'll bo worso thnn useless." Sho cooed wllh pleasure, gave him ono long, quirk hug. , "Ray, you darling tiling ... I knew you'd end by being sonslhle." But thnt night, ns ha loused slpcplnssly In his bed, ho could not decide whotber he had been sen Bible or Just a poor, weak fool, fCopyrfpfct, Dlnl PrcuJ But business and Ray don't aoree.
