'records of the American Petroleum Institute show, that 10 minutes or more of the motorist's time was required to fill his tank with gasoline. Today the operation is 'measured in seconds. Jtwas only a few years ago al- ('ko that the motorist depended for service upon the local garage, re pair shop or some store willing to 'take, on the future' of the motor vehicle and lay in a Btock of gaso line, a few cans for handling it , an,d a small ,' tank, sometimes no "larger than a barrel, for storage. '.Today the motorist is given serv ice at a filling station equipped to . meet every need of the car, and often stops at a station equipped equally well to .take, care, of the wants of the motorist himself. , . j Even as the' filling station has .improved in service and equip-; .ment. so also it has increased in numbers. In size and in value. Hundreds of millions of dollars have 'been Invested in service sta tions by oil companies in an ef fort to increase and Improve their retail outlets,, and, the filling serv ice station business has become a sizeable .Industry. It Is quite in keeping with prog ress, consequently, tha the service station business recently was put on a planoof high ethics through the adoption by the" parent petro leum Industry of a National Code of Marketing Practices for Re- f fined Petroleum Products. , This, in brief, is a code establishing fair business practices for meeting competition in retailing gasoline and lubricating oil. i Some l.OjiO. oil ' companies al ready have adopted the Code, which has been approved by the Federal Trade Commission, wmv r- n....".('' to. n v " (X ' ; r I f T - , t THE CHEVROLET Battery operated radio tell, although only a few years old, are at out of date whan compared with the modern all electric receiving set, aa the hoop kirt of grandma's day is in comparison with the dress of the' modern Miss. NEW DRIVING THRILL The popularity of any automo bile can never rise above the opinion of the man or the woman behind its steering wheen. - In the final analysis, the motoring pub lic's opinion Is molded by the way a motor car acts.. Perform ance, after all, is the acid test and of merit. hundreds more have informed the American . Petroleum Institute, which. sponsored itv, -their in tention to file formal acceptance with 'the Commission." 1 NEWTYPE Following several years of re search General Motors Corpora tion has' Introduced a new type of brake on the .1930 Buick. Bulck, first among automobiles to adopt four-wheel brakes, continued with the external .ype until the recent perfection' irf this new enclosed unit, which Its engineers pro nounce superior to any 'braking system yet evolved, . , Being fully enclosed the ' new Buick brakes exclude all mud and water and in addition afford sev eral entirely new features elimin ating all of the early difficulties with enclosed brakes. ' Locking of wheels at high speed, the' engineers point out, has been totally eliminated In the ' new Buick brake, as has heating of drums and amplification of brake noises. No lining has yet been developed which will not score brake drums, but the new Buick minimizes this by substituting a lead plate for a part of the lining. These new brakes are the two shoe, cam operated type, but with the self-energizing front shoe at tached to the hub plato by a forked link rod, tho articulated mounting preventing excessive sllt cnerglzing and thus eliminating locking of wheels. Colled wire springs are wound around tho outside of tho drums which assist in keeping the drums cool, and absorbs brake noises. The lead plate used with the lining Is 'alloyed only sufficiently to por 'mlt Its being attached to the shoo and holding Its shape whllo wear ing down with the lining. It con tains graphite and prevents scor ing by applying this lubricating film to the drum. There are two entirely separate sets of brakes operating on the saino drums on tho rear wheels, one pair being foot controlled and the other emergency. Braking effort Is divided equally between front and rear wheels. Brake' rods are mounted in sclf allgnlng bearings. All operating parts are Included In the chassis lubricating system, with easily ac cessible grease gun connections. "Bulck's new brakes are reputed to be not only mechanically per fect, but to stop tho cars easily and quickly under all speeds and tinder all conditions," says Mr. Schorer, local deneler. 1 "So, in the quarter of a century of automobile building, attention of the engineering laboratories has been focused on the question of how to make tho car easier to drive. After exhaustive tests and wide research by the leading en gineering brains of the country elimination of mental and physi cal strain comes now to the driver: through innovations introduced : after a long and tedious process of evolution," says a company of ficial. More than ever, the demand for, quietness is making itself felt. And realizing hiw much quietness means In the operation of the nu-, tomoblle, man ufacturers have spent millions of dollars on bodies, chassis and engines to accomplish this end. - ' '"The nnilti-rango gear shift on tho new '77', 70 and 'Imperial' Chryslers not only gives increased smoothness of operation, but it solves the equally important prob lem of quietness," says Mr. Will iams, of the Mcdford Motors, lo cal Chrysler dealers. "Someone has compared taking a golf r.troke with shifting gears. If tho club meets tho ball with a shnrp click, a good drive results and the golfer gets a feeling of satisfaction not unlike the pride: of the average driver who meshes his gears smoothly and quietly. If tho man on tho tee drives badly at a crucial point in the game, his day is ruined. So it is with the driver whose shift from one speed to another is accomplished by u loud, grating clatter of steel on steel that unnerves him, his pas sengers and pedestrians nt the curb. What has heen needed for a long time Is a fool-proof gear shift. "Its arrival in the Chrysler multi-range gear shift Is being greeted with nation-wide approval. The radically different Chrysler recrea ted motoring Ideals when it was first Introduced five years ago. The flexibility of Its speed ranges brings a new quietness and smoothness to the operation nt the multl-rango and the shifts between starting, accelcratiwn and speed range, come in short, easy stnges. 'Speed range back Into tho ac celeration range sends the enr leaping forward at GO miles nn hour. Then slipping again Into the f Ion ting speed range, which compares to the ordinary hln'j gear, a new speed sensation is felt. ' The acceleration range, unlike ordinary second gear, is quiet and Iihs an aeoelerative speed up to fJO miles an hour. Top speed In the Kpeed range Is capable of 40 miles an hour and the emergency heavy duty rjingo takes the car out of deep mud or sand, easily and effectively." -4 developed age resistors that have added years to the life of rubber products and have saved "count less millions of dollars for rubber consumers. "Of course, nobody keeps an idle tire so king as"' two yearst or more, unless it is a spare tire, and, by tho way, It is a good idea to use a tire cover on spares as the hot sun beating down on a spare does-not make .It -last any longer. However, age rcsisters . in ' Good rich tires have increased their life many times over their (former length of lofe in spHc of hot sun, hot pavements and abrasive roads. Wo do not claim that these age resistors work miracles nor that rubber science has devised processes that will eliminate dam ago to rubber goods by tho hot rays of the sun, but wo do know that some of tho world's greatest men have, given Goodrich credit for developing a process that saves millions every year to rubber con sumers by making rubber goods more resistant to the ravages of the elements." 1 Front Seat Advice If you miroad a ihln layer of vanplln over the battery iotg and tormlnalB It will prevent the cor rosion thnt makes looae connec tions and finally caU. away the metal. Historic parallels between the disappearance of ancient preju dices against bnnks, automobiles and railroads, freedom of the press and other once-hated ideas, and the overthrow of the long standing prejudice against cigar ettes, are presented In a current series of advertisements appearing In . practically every 'dally news paper. "Many ' inventions and ideas, now generally, accepted, have had to overcome tremendous blind prejudices at thai beginning. Just its in the case of cigarettes," the annonucement of the advertise ments declares. "But for these victories of common sense and in telligence, people today would not be enjoying general free educa tion, laws against child slavery, encouragement of science, enfran chisement of women who now have taken their rightful place of equality, and many other bene fits which once were fiercely re sisted. "Improvement and development of new ideas, in themselves fun -damentally sound, always have routed the ancient prejudices which constantly have fought against tho forward inarch of progress. In tho caso of clgnr ottcs, these improvements havo included the toasting process for removing irritating substances and harmful acrlds which are present in even the finest tobaccos In their natural state. "These advertisements are there fore presented with a doublo pur 'poso, not only on behalf of I-ucky Strike cigarettes, but also to re cord and emphasize the many other victories won over preju dice by American intelligence, contributing to the growth of our. country as we enjoy it today."
