LOOKOUTS LEAVE
AS FOREST FIRE
DANGER WANES
The lookoutH of the Crater Na
lional forest will prohahly be grad
ually laid off duty for tho year
from now on, according to tho
amount of rainfall at the stations
of thoir respective localities. Two
went off duty yesterday and one
more will be laid off today, which
with two who had ceased duty re
cently, leaves Uiree in the Apple
Bate section and one in the Dead
Indian dintrlct Mill on duty. Super
visor Hugh H. Itankln has been
away for Heveral days, and on hia
return hero the oihcra may be
ordered off duty within a. day or
so If It keeps on raining.
The two state lookouts ordered
off duty were both state lookouts
for state fire-protected land. They
were 11. V. Hichards, the lookout
at Raid mountain hi the Prospect
section, and Oliver Gaines, lookout
at Uuck Uock neur Trail. Chas.
Renle, the lookout at Hustler peak
in the Butte Falls district will
cease his duties today.
J. F. G. Cone, tho lookout on
ML McLaughlin, wont off duty
some time ago because tho clouds
and storms at his post way up on
the mountain ruined the visibility
of the lookout. Oil Winningham,
lookout on Whiskey Peak in the
Applegate section, was put out of
business hist Sunday 'morning for
the season when his lookout struc-
ture caught fire while he was out-
sldo repairing a chimney, and a
stuve onto betiding and wood. All
his personal belongings and the
government supplies on hand were
burned up with the structure.

her capable leadership for the past
ten years Jackson county has hail

the state excepting only Multno

In accept hm her resignation,
Mrs. Sadie Dunbar, executive sec

of the demands made upon her
timo by tho new business venture
she entered upon in Med ford last
year.
Airs. R. K. Green of Aledford
has been appointed to take Airs.
Holloway'a place. This is of much
interest to the health workers of
the county and state and Mrs.
Dunbar expresses the hope that
Airs. Green will receive the same
cooperation from health workers
that Mrs. Holloway enjoyed, and
added: "I have every reason to, be
lieve she will, and I shall expect
Jackson county to equal if not sur
pass Its previous record.'

When William Fox tells "Tho
Cock-lOyed World" about his sit
ver Jubilee next week, thero is
one Kroup of folks in Jackson
county to get the treat of thoir
lives, through the courtesy of J
B. Rolaman, local Pox manager
They are tho people of the Jackson
county poor farm, who will bo the
guests of the Craterian theater
Wednesday afternoon at a 2:30
matinee to soe tho excruciatingly
funny comedy, "Tho Cock-Eyed
World " which will open on that
day for a four-day engagement.
I'lans were being made this
afternoon by Memlcnhall, manager
of tho Hialto theater, to obtain
freo transportation for tho folks
also, and make their afternoon one
of complete pleasure.
VWhen tho folks hoard about tho
theater party, they wero over
joyed," saidMrs. Irene Wells, pro
prietor of tho home. "Of course
some of them are so old, they
enn't venture out, and still others
are 111 with colds at this time. But
there will bo a substantial num
ber of them, who will be able to
take advantage of the opportu
nity," she said,

railed through the influence of
Mrs. F. .1. Newman and a small
group of the women met in the
small dining room of tho hotel.
About 2o were present.
Whllo no decision as to whether
or not the permanent organization
would be formed was reached at
the time this paper pent to press,
a largo number of the members in

thought that the organization, If
formed, will not only act as an
auxiliary to the men's service club
but will carry on philanthropic
work of Its own.

HERDS LOCALLY
The problem of increasing dairy
herds In Jackson county and
southern Oregon came up for thor
ough discussion at today's lunch
eon of the' Med ford realty board,
abo attended by a number of Sled
ford business men and bankers. Tho
dairy industry could be brought up
to a much higher status than it
enjoys at the present, speakers de
clared. One Med ford creamery reported
that it has been expending $:! 5.000
monthly in payment for dairy pro
ducts and could easily buy five
times as much without overloading
its present market. liiscussion
revealed that outside dairy inter
ests could improve the Industry by
establishing themselves in the
Rogue River valley but it also re
vealed that such interests would
not buy valley dairy property in an
undeveloped state.
Farmers are encouraged to plant
all unused land to meadows and
take n greater interest in dairy
products. It Is likely a meeting of
Med ford business men and realty
board members will be called soon
to discuss the matter with grange
leaders from nil pnrts of the
county to devise ways and means
by which southern Oregon can be
come a greater dairy country.

SKY PHENOMENA
The unusual spectacle of a
meteor falling from tho sky north
east of the city at 0 p. m. last
Wednesday was apparently seen
by only one person of Medford and
vicinity Dwight Randall, minor
observer of the local weather sta
tion who was off duty at his home
in tho Siskiyou Heights section at
the time. At least, up to ditto no
other person has reported having
seen tho phenomenon.
Dwfght happened to look up nt
the sky to see what he thought
whs a shooting star falling with a
lot of smoke trailing behind it, and
while he was watching its descent
it suddenly burst into fragments,
making a brilliant sight, which
quickly disappeared from viow,
