In brief, It was thus: That the escape of a prisoner from Dartmoor Convict Prison on Saturday was much more remark able than It had appeared at first. while walking. There had been a light In which one of the gang was knocked out. t The police accompanied them to the place and found the clerk unconscious.- lie died In hospital. No trace of a gang could be found. Suspicion against the two men was confirmed when on Richard the police found a considerable sum of money In Belgian currency amounting to 10,000 francs. Wchard declared Hint It was his own. Richard admitted that he gave the blow which knocked out tbe clerk and declared that the blow was In self-defense. The Jury convicted of manslaugh ter, and tbe Judge Inflicted the se vere sentence of five years' penal servitude, and gave I'hlllp, who was found guilty of being accessory dur ing the fact, 12 months' bard labor. From tbe dock Richard bad made a violent protest against the sen tence, lie had ever since been a most difficult prisoner, and this was why he was In Dartmoor the Iso lated fastness among the clouds of a mountainous wild reserved for the worst convicts. This was the narrative which spread over two or three columns of the newspapor. I read them with growing mystification and alarm; What a trick of fate that had brought quiet and decorous Wood- The convict scurried over the wall to a waiting auto- -and a girl! The prison nfTlclals and the police were entirely nonplussed. They did not know whore the man had gone, or Willi whom. What they had discovered was Hie extremely clover way In which his accomplices oulsldi had worked without arousing tho least sus picion. The chief agent was apparently a roung woman who was seen in a car that pnsscd through the city it Exeter, S5 miles from the prison, early Sunday morning. It was much later when It wns discovered that the prisoner was missing: then, of course, It was far too late to trace the car. Out the policeman who saw It was so struck by the physiognomy f the man who leaned forward Im patiently and sold, "Uo on, go on!" Hint when tho description of tho tiiglllvo w ti s circulated ho had no doubt whatever tills was the same man. K The escape had been elaborately studied, and mice out of tho caII the prisoner had been abln to gel clear by a microscopical timing of the nimenifiits of tho warders and nffl cfis. The alarm system had beon cleverly deranged. , He had been provided with the cord and a Ihln sleel honk to throw .iver the wall, llo hsd scaled It nt the point nearest a plantation which, llliin lln re seconds, gave 111 in pcrtert cover. The car wait ed for him In the road below the copp'co. The authorit-ci suspected that without the assistance of an accom plice Inside as well as outside it would hnvo f.illcd. A further point ias that the accomplice outside must have been quite familiar with he routine of the prison. The prisoner, of whom a descrlp (Ion was Issued, was Kugcnc Rich ard, 3i. convicted nt Canterbury of niansliniKlilcr nnd srntPiieod In live years' penal servitude. lie de clined ai the trlnl lo rcienl a aluslo tact about hltnsrlf. Inf,t'ad of taking the train to London Hie two men went to the hotel. Late ai night they Informed Ibe police- thul they bud been uiolrsinl by a K;iim cot Into the midst of a sensational and sordid drama llko this! For I could not question that the hero of tho light on Dover cliffs and tho oscapo from Dartmoor Prison now lay In the guest room. It all dovetailed la too perfectly to leave a single loopholethe days, the limes, the circumstances. Tho police description of Rich ard might have beon written sitting In front of Cousin John his tall figure, his dark eyes and over hanging brows. And there was Veronica's sudden flight from I-oudon on Saturday morning, her secret return on Sun day evening, her concealment of a fugltlvo and such a fugitive! . And there was Pell's absence at tho same time. Was Pell the other accomplice, the second man in tbe car? Somehow this did not seem to harmonise with the worst sus picion Hint tortured me about his death. But Pell's absence would have to be explained. That some connection existed be tween the escspe from Dartmoor and the trngedy In the library at Newplace I could not doubt. It waa hateful to hare my mother In the midst of this confusion: but Veronica's blue eyes . . , they placed mo under compulsion. Nona of those considerations, however, was the most alarming that the newspaper suggested. An other transcended them all. Last night, when Cousin John leaped bnck from the equsre of light on the back lawn with that horrified whisper, I paid no special attention to his gesture.. 1 thought II part of his genoral objection to being seen by anybody. Now tho Idea. forced Itself Into my mind that It was a particular objection to being seen by Pro fessor l.axton. "That man!" I recalled his nerve stricken ex clamalloii. And the terrifying thought rnmo Hint, Idler In the night, when Cousin John took fright at the open window, be might have had more reason for alarm than I supposed. For La-iton was In Devonshire on Saturday, as I had Imagined do ing some archeoloRtcal work, and his letter to me came from Tavis tock close to the scene of Cousin John's est ape. And Laxton had acted very curiously for a profes sor of archeology on Sunday night 1 1 o-'lrtyM, ijr.V IV tn.
