Kveryone knows that dust, be it of coal, wood, flour, or paper, is sometimes explosive. It depend;; on just the exact admixture with air a grain too little or a grain too much but no one knows the exact danger point. The Society of Oerman Fngi neers devoted a special session of 'dut ex per ik' here to look into the degree of exploslveness and also Into the injury done by indus trial dust to human organisms, notably the lungs and the skin. Dr. Tebky of Dnsseldorf said lhat there are no adequate means for measuring dust p a r t i c 1 e s, which would be highly desira hie, as men machinery eoubl be adjust ed accordingly. Injury to the hu man. system depends not so much on whether dust particles are sharp edged, but on their size and chemical composition. The most dangerous, according to Dr. Teleky. are those between one half and two microtis in size, a mieon being one twenty-five thousandth of an inch. These sizes are readily absorbed by. the cellu lar tissues ami cause "dustly lung." Some metal dust Is so fine that it enters the pores of the si; in and causes dangerous subcutane ous incrustations. Relations between dust and hu midity also remain much of a mys tery. Experiments have shown the fallacy of the belief that hu mid air Is necessarily inure dust free than dry air. The reverse is often t he case. ROM F V) The Italian gov ernment's steady fight against il literacy is beginning to show re sults in census figures. In 11121, before the Fascist gov ernment came- into power, illit eracy in Italy reached 31 per cent, meaning that practically one out of every three persons could not read or write. This figure has been reduced to 2 7 per cent, as of the end of 1 !274 when the census started. A still further reduction could be chronicled today. The reduc tion is going on at the rate of about one per cent a year. At the same time the number of elementary schools is on the increase. In P-22-IH23 there were 1 1 2,073. Today there are over 12 1,000. The southern provinces of Cala bria, Puglia anil Sicily, together with the Island of Sardinia, show the heaviest figures of Illiteracy. Calabria still is unable to pro duce more than 52 per cent of her people who can read and write.
