the picking, packing and shipping
of Ihe Bartlett crop, which will
start the week of August IS.
The P.artleU crop Is estimated
at IK, 000 tons, close to the figure
of last season. Not less than a00
curs will be shipped to eastern
markets. The remaining 12,000
tons have been sold to northwest
and California, canneries, at prices
ranging from I7S.&U to S SO per
ton. Figuring the cannery slilp

car, the Barllett shipments will

Tlie Bartletts are now in prime
condition, wit h Ideal weather for
their growth.

ment wilt be reached the lust week
of August, and the opening days
of September.

house of the Medford Ice and Stor
age company, now filled with 8000
tuns of Ice; the pre-cooling and
storage plant, built nt a cost of
$125.00 by the same company, and
ready for test runs the coming
week; the $200,000 pre-cooling
plant of the Southern Oregon Sales,
Inc., now ready for operation, ware
house ami mechanical equipment of
the C. & K. company, representing
an expenditure of iso.ooo; the new
warehouse and packing plant of
the Kimball coinpi.ny, costing $25,
001), and wholesale purchases of
labor and time saving devices. In
cluding a nailing machine, that
j drives eight halls at one lick.
Innovations for ihe coming fruit
season will be the printing of the
wyrd "Medford" on all pear boxes.
In accordance with the wishes of
eastern buyers, who hold that the
word Meilford means more to buy
ers than llogue Valley or Southern
Oregon: and the Intention of the
Southern Pacific to dispatch two
fruit trains dally from the local
yards, during the fruit shipping
season.
All the packing houses of tills
city have forces of box makers at
work and the distribution of lug
boxes to the various orchards Is
well under way.

attacking the proposal of Senator
Smoot of I'tah for a sliding scale

of Senator Smoot to Mr. Hoover's

garded as certain that the sugar
schedule would form the principal

mittee will hold a hearing on the

committee action Is expected to
follow promptly. There are indi
cations that a number of promi
nent republican senators. Including
Senator Borah of Idaho, also are
not wholly satisfied that the Smoot
plan, will prove efficacious for.

Senator Harrison said In his

Senator Connally said the ob
jective of Chairman Smoot was

he added that the sliding scale
would do this.
