II APPLEGATE FIRES; A thunder storm In the south Applegate section, which began at 7 o'clock last evening, the light ning' of which struck about 30 times in the Crater National forest started two, forest fires, one of which was thought under control, and the other to be still burning today. During this storm light rain fell from ope-half to three-fourths of an hour in the Siskiyous. and bare sprinkles at the lookout points of Dutchman peak, Whiskey peak and Wagner Butte, the rain not reaching the central Applegate country at ull. Only a little show er fell at the Star Ranger Station, the fartherest point north that rain fell. However It rained heav ily In the Klamath forest along the Klamath river. , The first forest fire reported here from one of the lightning strikes was at Mt. Baldy near its top which a It ho It had not been heard from by early this afternoon Judging by Its smoke, which could be seen from here, It Is practically under control. The second lightning fire report ed, at practically the same lime, was at Burton Butte, about two miles south of Baldy mountain which from the condition of its smoke was apparently under con trol und practically out. The Crater National forest head quarters here reported this noon that if a wind arises in the course of the afternoon and evening.
