Westerfield) Some pouitrymen think that ton-; ies are all that is needed to pro mote growth and that drugs are ' a in eessity in growing pullets, i This is :i very serious mistake. There is nothing that will pro mote healthy growth, either in the1 human, or animal life, but lb" purest of food, or ft-cd. The nutritive value of food does not consist wholly of the fats, proteins and riirbo-hydrates, but in the natural mineral elements t contained in the original products , from which it is made. ljuite often these mineral elements are destroyed ill the process of manu-, facluVe, or by being subjected to extreme heat. : In one of tho eastern labora tories a carefully planned test was made of eight grains, wheat, corn,; oats, barley, rye. kaffir corn.j buckwheat and sunflower seeds, j These were fed in their natural , state to a guinea pig. The pig i grew rapidly and was able to re-: produce its kind and they in turn! grew to maturity as healthy pigs.' These grains were then cooked j In a pressure cooker, the pig was weighed and the feeding of tho cooked grains was started. It too j only 30 ilnys to reduce his weight nearly fid per cent, he became blind and paralyzed. Tlje lifer giving elements so bountifully sup-J plied to these grains were de stroyed in the cooking and the residue, although being the name, grains, were lacking In growth j promoting elements and failed to ! promote growth, or even sustain : life. In like manner powdered by-1 products have been deprived of their life giving elements during j the process of milling and there-1 Tax ii img Around One of the largest airplane han gars in the cotuitry Is to be built on tho Detroit municipal airport. The' next important requisite Is the digestibility of a) teed pro ducts used in the feed mixture for growing pullets. There is a ; direct correlation between digesli- i bility ami the rale of growth in-' duced by feeds. Orug.s and Ion -1 ies will not suffice. A ft ed low in digs ibiljl y Is always high in fiber and rough -1 age, such feed will Hot pro ide j grow tli promoting elements snf- j fieient to make rapid growth in; animals, or fowls, they become undernourished weaklings. All grains in their original, or natural stale, are relatively high in digest i bility. but when groun-1 and separated Into parts and some parts taken away and others ad-' ded, then it is that by-products are made and they are always low in digestibility and seldom do more than maintain the body in a stationary condition. j A fifty per cent digestible feed: will g i v o a rate growth of less than -10 per Cent, which is little J better than merely holding their j own. Such methods of feeding j check growth and make culls out fif good pullets; To be successful, one must have rapid growth and) still more, a continuous growth from chick to mature hen. these are the pullets that mature first, lay first and lay in longer cycles, the late moultcrs and the heavy producers. Continuous growth and the; higher rate of growth can only be j assured by feeding higher digest ible products, which in turn builds) up in the pullets body, a higher j resistance to disease and insure that state of being we call health.
