Chapter 17 FOUND THE CAT'SEYE RING JlWArM.MK I.A DUCIIESSE bad 1TI given a garden-fele, for It was her birthday. Consequently the Moat House lawns were gay with colour being an occasion, the whole country was here to pay due homage to rank, typified by the DuchesB, and wealth and beauty, In the shapely person of my lady Helen. Now, remote from all this bab bling splendour, yet within ear shot, a darkavlsed country fellow laboured In the herb garden and now and then stared at all this niaKtilflcence through a gap In the Intervening hedge. And Ihe county, male and female, chattered of the late Julian Guy ffnrd, his murder, the Inquest, and "that blood-guilty wretch" Sir Rich ardand agreed that the sooner he wo 8 taken and made a dreadful example, ail object lesson to like minded murderous vlllultis, the bet ter for the world. "Iiiid, Sir John," nodded the Ditch eBB as lie bowed, "ye look a trolfle iTiirrin. 'tis hut weather for bunting elusive murderers. Have ye enny news, Sir John?" "Affulrs promise, madam," puffed Sir John, handkerchief a-flutter, "tomorrow, today even, ye may hear of bis bum his capture. And what's more, madam 'tis now known that the murderer wore g cat's eye ring, madam!" "Aha, and what then?" "Why, madam, we have but to find this same ring and ba our case la brought to successful Issue." "Ay, sure, Sir John, always sup posing this ring has the murderer safe inside It!" Nearby, along a shady walk, stood my lady Helen and the Vis count, "So you persist?", be demanded breathlessly. "Is It because you love another?" My lady turned and swept him with withering glance; his pale cheeks glowed, between his lips was a glimmer of sharp teeth, as he hissed: "Stint your lofty pride, madam, 'tis well known you ride out o' nights to keep tryst with ... a murderer!" Helen gasped, and turning, stood appalled, so fearful was the change In him; lips back-drawn from gnashing teeth, eyes that burned with douioulao glare; she turned and left him. And she tried to laugh oven while her flesh crept with sudden, strange, unaccount able dread; thus when she found Captain Despard walking beside her, his assured air and pleasant voice were alike, for once, un fclgnedly welcome. "Our llrocklehurst," said he smil ing, "shows something peevish!" "He Is Insufferablol" crlcl my lady. "And I think dnngerous, Helen, and this plcnses me." "And wherefore?" "Hccause to protect you will be my supreme and constant Joy." They now paused by (he rustic nrbour. "Hut." said she, "how If I refuse inch protection?" "You cannot," ho answered gent ly, "for I have niudo for you an arnioiir of my love. Nny, hoar me, Helen, for dost know 1 lovo thee; my eyes have spoke It since first limy looked on thee." Ills voice -ilionk, his cheek glowed, bis long lashed eyes held hers: and then, from somewhere nearby came a "lolernl whistling. The whittling came nearer: Captnln Dcspnrd :luiiied angrily nlmiil; then, sigh ing her relief, Helen turned and i'd away. Hardly was she gone i linn a tierce hand clutched the enp u hfs arm and lie beheld the con tortfil femures of Viscount llrock lehurst. "So?" niiitileil tho captain. "Pry lug, were you?" "Why then I mean . . . that' I know . . . what Julian knew." "Ah?" murmured the captain. "And Julian Is dead!" For a long moment they stood staring eye to eye and utterly motionless, then Captain Despard strolled away, lint tbe Viscount leaned there against the arbour. Someone nearby began to whistle dolefully, and the Vis count beheld the broad back of a gardener bowed to his labour, and staring at this back became aware that the company had drawn apart to m;io way for the lank, grim figure of Master Titus Oldcratt. Viscount Brockleburst started forward so suddenly that he col lided with the gardener, pushed him aside and hastened to Join the silent and curious company now grouped about Master Oldcratt who spoke In voice authoritative yet highly respectful. "Sir John Parret, my lords, la dles aud gentlemen, by reason of devotion to duty, of zeal unremit ting and dogged determination we ha' lately discovered that the male factor wanted for tbe late heinous crime o' murder bore upon bis band ... a cat's eye ring. Therefore I set about a seeking o' this same ring and " here Master Oldeiaft nodded portentously and held up bis clenched right hand; quoth he: "Sir John, my lords, ladles and gentlemen, with this happy and fort'nate result!" Master Oldrrnft opened his hairy Angers to show a slim, gold circlet whence the cat'seye stone seemed to glare at them. Master Oldcraft continued: "My lords, ladles and gentlemen, now 1b there ever a gentleman pres ent as claims knowledge o' this ring?" Silence, deep and breathless, while eye questioned eye until Master Oldcratt spoke again: "Why then, It now behooves me to say precisely wbere I found this deadly evidence. Yesterday I turned my attention to this village to the Cuyfford Arms. 1 hunted high and low, tnd at last my de termination was rewarded and I found this ring In a gentleman's valise In the valise of Captain Despard!" Captain Despard smiled and reached out his band: "May I see this ring more nearly?" Master Oldcratt hesitated, but at stealthy nod from Sir John he placed the ring upon the captain's open hand. "Now, sir." questioned Sir John, "ha' you ever seen this ring ere now?" "Why, yes, I fnncy I have. Sir John." "Aha, and where sir, where?" "That, sir, I do not feel called upon to say." "Why, then, Captain Despard, perhaps you will be so obliging to tell ua how It came hid in your valise." "Ah, Sir John, this I propose to discover at the very earliest op portunlty," smiled the captnln. "Meantime, you tell ni. this ring was actually upon the murderer's hand, officer?" "Indeed, sir!" nodded Master Oldcraft. '"Twas on the villain's dondly pistol hand, sir." "Why then see now!" said the captain. "Your murderer's hand was something smaller than mlr.n!" And holding up his right hand Captain Despard showed the ring perched upon the tip of his little finger. Despard laughed gently and tossod the ring at Mnatur Oldcraft. who, contriving to catch It with an effort, thereafter stood scowling down at Ihe cat'a-eye ring as If II had bitten him.
