The writer has talked, sung, shouted and warned about earwigs for years past. I have believed them present in Medford and have im plored clubs, associations and in dividuals to watch for them and bring in any suspected insect. About three years ago the in- pectors placarded the entire coun ty. But it remained for one wo man to finally report a case last June. This led to the survey which shows about 50 localities Infested in Medford. The infestation is not heavy, except In a few spots and we believe that, with perfect co-operation from the property holders, we can reduce the infesta tion to n minimum if not eradi cate the earwigs. But it is essen tial that we get henrty .co-operation. I.lfo History. The female earwig deposits from 30 to 60 eggs in a cavity or under a board or rock.. The first brood appears about April and another follows during the sum mer. They are nocturnal in habit, hiding in leaves, crevices or under objects during the day time. At night they sally forth. They climb to the top of the trees or work around the roots, they onter houses and infest them from cellar to garret. They are not at all fas- carefully spread in cracks and crevices and under objects to be out of the way of birds, cats, dogs, etc The earwig eats of this bait and dies. The sodium fluoride Is not poi sonous to humans In small quanti ties, but its action is very slow, requiring from two to four days to kill the Insect. Also this bait, made with bran, must be moist to be effective. ltecoiiimeiida tions. I recommend that, pending ac tive operations by the inspectors, that property owners obtain a recognized BAIT, not n spray or powder to sprinkle on the Insects and follow closely the directions of tho manufacturer. While we, do not favor any one bait above another at present, yet wo are pre pared to recommend one which 'we have every reason to believe has been proven to be effective. Tho name of this bait will be given to applicants who will ask the county agent or Mr. Oatman. Earwigs found under boards, stones or other places may bo in stantly killed by pouring a small qunntlty of gasoline on them or down tho crevices. Clasollne, of course, not to be npplled where there Is danger of fire. Other in structions can he had from tho In spectors or from Mr. AVilcox, coun ty agent. E L CHILDREN RETURN T The many friends of Fred W. Payne, tho dean of the rural car riers of the Medford postoffleo, and who haB been off duty for the past 10 months because of 111 health, will be pleased to learn that he was able to resume duty today as carrier on route 4, which he has served during bis many yearH as rural carrier. The vacation season of the post office is now In full swing. Of the staff, F. K. Nichols, accompanied by Mrs. Nichols, started on Ills 15 day vacation today by departing for Los Angeles by the coast route to visit friends In that city. Karl X Scrlpter and Marion K. Harper begin their vacations tomorrow and K. P. Sllllman will return to duty .Saturday from bis vacation. 11. F. Swan, well known carrier, who had been enjoying a vacation period of several weeks, during which he and Mrs. Swan attended the Shrine convention at Ixis An-; geies, from where they went to j Paonkr, Colo., for a visit with rel.i-; Itlves, arrived home yesterday and ! -a n.,.l l Hnlu ,.,ln.. ll.u Uu'no will remain at Paonia for sonie lime yet because of serious Illness of a relative. And so they decided to forget Dan Cupid temporarily and went home with tho Kin mat li Falls no tice matron like good children. Iwilma Forgely, not iulte 15. and (Jack Learner, 17, who eloped to i Medford and were applying for n I marriage license,, when they were taken into custody by local officers j following n call from the Klanialll Falls district attorney, left Med ford yesterday afternoon with a ! Juvenile officer. j Until youngsters were dlsan I pointed that their idans had not worked, but acted like good little 'spoilsmen when they knew "the !jig was up." They agreed to wall ! until they had at least reached I legal age before they made anolb er attempt to get married. Flope. ments nre ruled out for the future, ' they told local officers. 1 The law dictates that n girl Iniust be past 15 and a boy IX. even With the consent of their parents, ; before they may obtain a license i lo marry. m nit ms J.G.PE NNEYGSt Our Policies The fact that J. C. Penney Company stores do not hold "Special Sales" or use comparative prices sometimes brings cut the question, WHY such a policy? We never tell you an article is worth ten dollars, and we are going to sell it Saturday only for seven-fifty. If the article was worth ten dollars, that would be our price. For the first valuation would be placed there by us any way. If it is worth ten dollars on Friday, unless it is soiled, out of style or defective it appears to us it would be worth ten dollars on Saturday. Why lower the price Saturday and raise it again Monday? A one price store, like ours, favors none in particular, and neither does it penalize anyone. rw - What would be your reaction if your local banker would placard his place of business with signs reading, "Five Dollar Gold Pieces, Saturday only, S3.98." It is ridiculous to imagine such a case and rightly so, because five dollar gold pieces do not depreciate in value their worth is standardized. And while on the word "standardized," let us again remind you that we build our mer chandise UP to a standard, Not DOWN to a price. Our quality and values are standardized in 1400 stores. Style can never be standardized. Our slogan, "Quality Always at a Saving" is supported by the fact that we do notsell "seconds" or defective merchandise. We do NOT buy job lots or bankrupt stocks. Hence you will find here, "Quality Always at a Sav ing," A reality not merely an advertising slogan. Inch asphalt: I, o. llerrold, $3, fi3.1.3. Kive-inch' nHphalt; U O. llerrold, ?3.427.K. ' l)r. K.
