"It's go ing to lead to morn operations than all the acci dents a n d d in cases people ever had. . . . iJerause now, with tills x ray, a surgeon can show his pa tient an actual photograph of what is the matter with him. 'Look here,' he'll say. 'Here's a picture of wiiat you look like inside. Heav ens and earth! You don't want to go on looking like that, do you?'" Not far-fetched at all. Kven now scores and scores of machine-made hypochondriacs are nursing sag ging stomachs, livers, kidneys or colons, although in truth their or gans are not out of place, even though the x-ruy picture doesn't show 'them precisely in the posi tion asinnod them in old-fashioned "physiology" or anatomical charts. If you accept I lie evidence in the x-ray 'picture you will keep right on carrying a sackful of gall stones until thi' day youro hurried to the operating room, because the x-ray picture doesn't show any si ones there. Ur if you elect to have trouble elsewhere you may get yourself into an operation for kidney stones which are npparvnt in the x-ray picture but not to be found when the kidney Is explored. A good many correspondents tell me they are going to have un x-ray examination made and find out jtiL what is the matter with their stomach, if I will kindly tell ttiem a good place to go. I can only wish them luck and assure them that many a case hsis been opened on X-ruy evidence, only to be closed up as quietly as a Volstead raid. The x-ray did for a time make some good doctors falter in their work, but today the old-time meth od of stripping and examining the patient with eye, ear and hand is in better caste than ever and the bright young "x-ray specialists" who promulgtiled tlte notion thnt tile x-ray examination would de tect lung tuberculosis more cer tainly than the physician could, have g'jne the way of the great auk. The Interpretation of the x-ray evidence Is an art. rather than a science, und medical experience, not mere technical training, is nec essary for the wise use of this aid in diagnosis.
