LITTIJ-: ItOCK, Ark.. Juno 18. (fP) Deputy Sheriff Georse Johnson, charged with murder in the slaying of Cllenn Quay, 211, at Newport, Ark., was held today in tho state penitentiary here after his removal from two jails yester day in fear of mob violence. Quay WH8 shot through the hark by Johnson as he broke away from the officer after being arrested on a charge, of intoxication. The youth's dash for liberty was made near the police station door and the fatal shot was fired as he darted into an alley. Johnson first was removed to the county ail at Bateavillo after a crowd of men, incensed at what they described as unwarranted use of a pistol by an officer, gathered about the local Jail. Later Sheriff D. JL. Nance said he had heard re ports th;it the Ratesvillc jail was about to i;e stormed and advised that the prisoner be removed to the penitentiary. The deputy sheriff was brought here In the custody of Cnlef of Police O. C. Martin of Newport and several other officers. At first he refused to discuss the slaying but later told penitentiary officials the youth suddenly struck him as they entered the Jail at Newport and ran. "I then drew my pistol." Johnson said, "intend ing to shoot only to frighten him. but I st ubbed my too and the weapon discharged accidentally." Ho said he had arrested Quay for being Intoxicated. Johnson's statement affirmed an explanation of the shooting given yesterday by Chief Martin. Quay was shot Sunday night and the. off bier arrested and charged with murder yesterday. Johnson will be held hero until bis prelim inary hearing is arranged. . -Tho deputy sheriff is tho futher of 10 children. City, flying two Curtis planes, were visitors at the Medford air port yesterday afternoon, en route to I'ortland and Seattle. The party was accompanied by a second wom an pilot. Miss Margaret Terry of New York City, flying u new Spar tan biplane. Miss. Nichols, with six years avi ation experience, has flown her ship since leaving New York with two men in a cabin plane. These two ships were joined at Tulsa. Ok la., by Miss Perry, who plans to return to Dos Angeles next week to make further preparations for entering the girls air derby from 1oh Angeles to Cleveland. O., next September. She has had experi ence of only a few months, but de spite that fact she Is said to bo an accomplished young pilot. In explaining the purpose of the tour and the flying chilis, Mr. Oer tol said the first club was estab lished three months ago at Long Island. N. V., and has already a good sized menibershlp. These clubs will be located near the prin cipal ciiicH of the country and aro expected to do much in populariz ing aviation among those of the wealthier class by providing a con genial atmosphere for ihe partici pation in flying as a sport. I n co u rse of time, n chain of 'chilis is to be established, Includ ing Pacific coast points, such as iLos Angeles, San Francisco, Port land and Seattle. Kach unit in the chain will have its private flying field, with hangars, storerooms, and machine shops. While flying will be the renter of activities, the social end of the club life will not be neglected, Mr. Oertol explained. Kach club will have its own club house, comparable with the best In the nation, suitable for dancing, card parties and other similar forms of amusement. National Control. The clubs will be under the di rect control of tho national or ganization, Aviation Country Clubs, Inc., and there aro no local mem berships, all memberships granted being in tho national body. "It will only be a short time be fore a member of our organiza tion," said Mr. Oertel, "will be able to easily circle tho United States like wo are doing, visiting every state In tho union. Tho In dividual member will bo accorded the courtcsic of all clulm on route. His plane is serviced and ho will bo able to spend a pleasant even ing at tho club." Among the prominent members of tho organization so far aro Wil liam P. McCracken, Jr., assistant secretary of commerce; Kdward Warner, assistant secretary of the navy for aviation: Commander Richard K. Ityrd. C. H. N.; Cor nelius Vindorbllt, Ctiblor Colgate, W. K. D. Stokes, and many others. The average cost of establishing an aviation club, outside; of tho property cost. Is $104,000, includ ing buildings and equipment.
