year or two Inter, the members
found themselves carrying a pretty
heavy burden. But thero were no
crepe hnngern nmoncr the member
ship. They nil put their shoulders
to the when) and by a courso of
united action nnd cooneratlon,
close economy and Intelligent fi
nancial management, tho debt wan
finally cleared.
In addition to this, the lodge,
severnl years npo, nrqulred. the!
cemetery plot south of tho city, nnd i
a few years ago pnrehnsed the lot;
at the corner of Sixth and Grnpo,
nnd upon which, it Is the hope nnd
dream of tha lodge, to erect. In the !
not far distant future, a lodge tern-1

to the membership, hut a busings,

only on rare occasions that this is
opened to the public, but, In view
of tho fact that General Wm. C.

itant, will be present and confer
this decoration, It will on this occa
sion he a public affair nnd every
body is invited to bo present to
witness the ceremonial.

Fellows Explained
A person, even the uninitiated,
often hears -"the expression, "I floe
you have been down to Jericho,"
littlp. emblem of the. order, the wey
known three links, worn on the
lapel of the coat or on the vest.
"Down , to Jericho," among the
knowing ones, means that a man
has taken the degrees of Odd Fel
lowship, one of which has special
co-relation to the biblical story of
tho traveler who journeyed to
Jericho nnd fell among thieves and
was robbed and wounded nnd left
by the wayside for dead.
Biblical -readers will recall how
he was rescued nnd revived by a
Samaritan hence the common
phrase, "the good Samaritan." . So
"down to Jericho" has become a
genernl Introduction when a mem
ber of the order meets a stranger
member. x

1913 RECALLED
Sixteen years ago this month,
Medford Lodge" No. 83 received
and entertained its first session of
the stato grand lodge. Although
at that time Medford' was some
what In the "dumps" following tho
deflation of her late incipient
boom, Medford lodge was not dis
heartened. They provided such a
reception and entertainment that
this city was even then voted, one
of tho livest and livliest towns in
Oregon,' and that session dl'd as
much us anything olrfo to dissipate
tho general rumor that Medford
"had gone dead."
Tho visitors were so favorably
Impressed with Medford's spirit of
hospitality and good will that they
have longed for an opportunity to
ngain visit this city, and especially
since reports of her late progress
and advancement have been gener
ally heralded. Members of the or
der gladly welcome the occasion to
visit this city again, and thoso who
have never seen Medford are com
ing with- great expectations. And
every one who can is going to take
advantage of this opportunity.
Hence the big crowd that is an
ticipated. From ,all oyer Oregon
and northern California Odd Fel
lows and Rebekahs are expected to

Its groat aim is to cement mankind
Into a universal brotherhood where
each shall be under obligation to
care for and assist the sick and
afflicted.
Odd Fellowship encourages no
movements In conflict with the or
der of government. On the con
trary, It demands a strict support
of any government under which It
exists.

friendship, love and truth. These
