fair estimate of the lady's intelli
gence by observing her dogs.
There is now plenty of experi
ence to prove that tho girl or
woman who usually wears proper
or hygienic shoes if any, may doll
up with whatever freak conceits
she wishes for a party or a special,
occasion, without doing the dogs
any .anting injury. But on the
other hand there is enough experi
ence to prove that few girls or
women can habitually or dally
mistreat their dogs with freak
shoes without paying for it in suf
fering, disability or at least the
awkwardness of deformity.
When one speuks of proper or
hygienic shoes for girls or women
today, It is pleasant to remark, one
does not think of hideous or ugly
orthopedic contrivances at all.
Altho the shoe makers have held
back much more obstinately in the
reform of shoes for girls and wom
en, they havo at least compromised
with the cry for relief to the extent
of offering a reasonable selection
of models in ladles' footwear that
not only delight the unhappy feet
but look as neat apd stylish as a
regular lady could wish.
College women, having the ad
vantage of better education, both
above and below the nock, particu
larly bolow, in recent years have
been among the earliest to adopt
tho moro hygienic shoes now avail
able. These girls, with a reason
able amount of physical training,
apprecintu the value nf sound feet;
they are willing to give the feet a
fair break; and they find that tho
dogs respond well to kind treat
ment. A freshman likely cncoiiri
ters difficulties, for It takes some
tlmo for the dogs to grow accus
tomed to freedom whon they aro
first released from captivity. But
a soph or a junior can tuss - tho
old gym shoes or her regular
brokues in tho corner and Insinu
ate her toes into whatever extrava
gance a heavy shindig may call for
and the faithful dugs will stand by
her nobly lo tho end of the party.
It would be a salutary regulation
if girls were not admitted to school
or college classes wearing heels
over an inch high or less than two
Inches wide. It is a travesty on
educntlnn that girls are sometimes
admitted to high school or In some
benighted communities oven to
grade school classes wea ring
French heels or something equally
ridiculous. That thoso unfortu
nato girls conio ffoin homes whore
ignorance, even Illiteracy, prevails,
seems to make little difforenrp to
the morons who wish to do like
wise. This is a matter of health
and education mainly. The school
