MEDFOTtP MftTC TRIBUNE, MEDPORD, OT?EC!ONT, WEDNESDAY, MAY S, 192H. PXGE TITTIET! Help For the Man Who Wants to Build Beauty, Durability V; Found in Stained Wooden Shingles By the Architects' Small House Service Bureau ot the United HUhUm, inc. Shingles Can be one of the most attractive of building finishes when properly cttUned in picturesque oloru. In fact, more variety In ex terior color effects can be man aged through tule type of lumber - than any other, due to the harmony tf shingles and stain. The stain sinks into the wood, coloring the npiB so may re em Die lied veivci. Properly protected with stain or paint the well made wooden shingle is an excellent material for roof ' and aiding, while the addition of either of these preservatives gives .a more thau effective appearance. Since shingles, because of their po sition on tt dwelling, are exposed to the destructive forces of wind an rain, some method of preserva tion must be employed. Even the most, durable varieties of -wood, such as cypress, cedar, the red woods, etc., are rendered far' au- 'perlor when piotected in this way. .. Preserve Hidden Farts In order to be ekven the larsrest , degree of protection available, shin gles oeiore Deing applied to a nouse, . ( should be pie -dipped In a shingle stain, which penetrates the wood. Preservation is the chief reason for this treatment, however. The nat ural grain of' the wood fa thereby ' emphasized, and a rich quality of Color ia obtained, exceptional beauty It afforded the house. i Prestalned ohlnglea are not apt (io vcup nor win ineir original posi .'.tlon become easily disturbed. On -the' other hand, where the stain is hot applied until after the shingles . - nave oeen piacea, tne greatest mea sure of protection is not obtained for the hidden .and underparts. - Stain or paint, the natural pre servatives of wood, can be depend ed upon to seal the pores in the shingles and thereby prevent the progress- 01 weainering. -ine re bidt In wearing capacity and gen eral appearance is greatly en- ' Itancea. The correct application of ' the stain, of course, la essential to the most effective results, and the best method of handling is tto dip ' one cout and brudh one coat. The dipping insures penetration and even distribution of color, as pre viously explained, and covers both sides of the shingles and under neath the lap for a distance.- The factory dipped product is recom mended. ; . i Reduce Fire Hazard Many different types of stains and paints to. be applied to shin gles are avauaDie to me nome own " -er. Stains, for Instance, which con- : tain, creosote are highly valued for their decay preventing' qualities. Special fire-resistant paints have been developed to resist heat and tc prevent Bh In tries from"cuppIner or. -developing "fuzziness.". When - shingles curl at the corners or take ' on a coat of moss, they afford a . lodging place for burning embers -1 or sparks flying about. Coated with ' a fire resistant paint, however, the . fire hazard is very much reduced. . ! Since shingle stains are available In a variety of different colors. It ia possible to plan a h6uae quite out Vi. win kuiuuiviipiako u upiug a solid color for the body color and incorporating a variety of shades In' the roof. The color combina tions ' are simply endless, and anions: the most agreeable are sil ver gray for the body color and 1 moss green and gray ror tne rooi, ' or red and brown roof, with a lighter brown body.- Olive greens and tans are also very popular col ors. The designers have pro vided five rooms, each of adequate size, but no more, and have arranged them so that the house caa be built inexpensively. A The rectangular plan u r one of the important ways ' that has been used to cut costs. Something has been . saved by enclosing the stairway sa as to minimize millwork. Then the fireplace, put on an inside wall, ef fects an additional saving. uore particularly, economy arises through good use of the space. The amount of area needed for hallway amounts in total to an unusually small proportion of the plan. Fur ther economies can be materialized through omission of the porch. Yet here is an excellent house of fine architectural feeling, with & plan of real convenience. Every room In the house has cross venttla- : tion. . There are even windows In ' two of the closets. The drawings, particularly as to the plans, do not show how care fully the details of various kinds have been worked out. Take the kitchen, for example. II What You May Want to Know About Building Questions addressed to this pa per will be Ofw if rrrd by the Archi tects' Small House Service Bureau o the United States, inc. Unclose a tamped addressed envelope, Q -Aftr heavy rains walla are wet. Sometimes the damp riesa is ar a window, but not utwuyt. It is usually damp ubout the fireplace and above It In the second story. Is it be cause the stucco Is too thin? It is on cinder blocks. AThtn stucco Is not likely to be the cause,, nor is It the fault of the cinder blocks. Jt may be that the mortar Joint was not interrupted aa It rhould hftve been. More likely, water is getting in around the win dow frames between the wood and the nii-aoiii-y. They should be prop erly calke 1. Get in touch with some calking concern In yuur locality. Then Install a product particularly devised to do this work. Have your' chimney Inspected. The flashings may not be tight. Probably the coplug at the top is not waterproof. Q The man who set the fur ' nu.ee did not put asbestos paper . ou the pipes. He says that It is not necessary, but it seems to me that It cheapens the job. A Your furnace man js right. More heat is lost across common asbestos paper than across bright tin. If you cover your piped with cellular asbestos that would be a different thing, Q We had a fire. The con tract for repairs called for everything to be "as good as or ' better than formerly." They re- -laid a good deal of the old floors that had been water soaked. . Now there are cracks between the boards. They squeak and some patching was necessary. Is this living up to the contract? A We do not know what the con Oltions of your floors wore formerly, but floors laid as you describe are ! not good floors. Have them In- I npccled by an architect or by a competent builder. Employ an at torney If necessary to conserve your imprests. . Q In a basement wall that was plastered the plaster falls off and we find the wall to be very damp. Can you advise what to use in replastering? A We recommend that the scarce of dampness be searched ouV and eliminated, that the wall be painted with hot tar or asphalt or other standard waterproofing compound, that wood furring bo applied, then lath and plaster. Thla will give you a warm, dry wall. . , , . . " Q Wo are planning a house of Ule and would like to know whether It can be plastered dl lectly on both sides. . -: A It can be If the mortar Joint Is broken. If this Is not done, water will be carried along the mortar bed. This Is true , of all walls of masonry. For regions of severe winters It Is undoubtedly Kworth while to furr exterior walla of ma sonry. -'-. : , Q Is" It ' practical to paint V - a basement concrete floor? If so,: what is the formula for the material to be used? A It la quite practical to paint such, floors. For this purpose we recommend - pafnta particularly made for this purpose. Do not try to mix them yourself. Apply them according to the directions of the manufacturer We send , by letter names of manufacturers.
