STEDFORD MSTL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. Onr.CiOX, unman AY. MAY 2, 1020. PAGE g-jftVEN HUNT'S CRATERIAN ARE G000 AS TEX The audiences which went to Hunt's Cratorlan theater last night ! mostly out ot curiosity to see and hear Texas Qulnan, the famous or notorious nationally known en tertainer, and set a second-hand glimpse of metropolitan night club life In the all-talking whoopee mov ing picture, "Queen ot the Night Clubs." and also anticipating good entertainments in general, were most agreeably surprised to fintl such excellent short talkies, which opened- with an artistic, classical musical gem none other than tho singing by Giovanni, famous tenor of the Metropolitan Opera com pany, of Va Prononcer La Mort, from act IV of the opera, Lajuive. The rendition, with symphony orchestra accompaniment, and tho rich tragic voice of the star so . touched Jhe heartstrangs of the audiences, whether possessing mus ical aducatlon or not, that both audiences - did the unusual by breaking out In hearty applause of a vaudeville talkie: Tho most of tho ' hearers only knew that Giovanni was giving the despairing expression In song of a man con demned to death with his daugh ter,, that went over so big that they were on the vergo of weeping with him. ' This dramatic singing and acting alono is worth the price of admission, especially to opera lov ers and others with musical lean ings, s . , In fact, the present bill, which nlavn afternoon and niirht rlnltv un- Ty til next Sunday, Is one of tho best uaianccu oiierings seen in many a day aj a Modford theater grand opera: Edward Everett Ilorton, the famous funster of the stage and fcercen, and company, in a laugh able short comedy, "Dad," a lesser but pleasing act, Baby Folsom, in "A Modern Frlscllla," and then the main whoopco show of Texas Gul nan, who has been on the front pages of tho newspapers for the past week because of the Inability of the federal and city police of ficers of New York to obtain her conviction on liquor selling charges In a. night club, which Is reported to pay her (2000 weekly for acting as hostess. The "Queen of tho Night Clubs" has nothing startling In tho way of merit, although well staged and having a good company of prom inent film actors in support of Tex, but attracts eager interest by ex ploiting the gay night club life and j in Tex's own cafe with her con- ducting It, as hostess, In her vlva 1 clous, cheer leader, "como on, suckers" manner. - Tho character istic abandon ot hundreds of well dressed .men an4..women patrons and the sort of entertainment In the night clubs is Bhown realistic ally., but to catch tho full appre ciation of a night club, many of us out hero in tho sticks, after seeing l'cxas exposftlo nof it, aro of tho opinion that ono must bo liolf shpt an old Greek term meaning befuddled. Tho "Queen of the Night Clubs" Is percolated with Broadway slang and wisecracks, some of which arc good, and somo of Texas Guinan's liomo-made philosophy. Ono ot the best of tho wisecracks comes when Tex Is being questioned by an at torney during a murder trial grow ing out of a night club tragedy: tho lawyer says, "Tou understand English, do you not?" and Tex an swer, "Yes, but I am moro familiar with Scotch." A Interesting lovo story courses through the talklo ploy, and the courtroom scene Is a well piayea one. Supporting tho much talked- Tbf star aro such well known film actors as Eddlo Foy, Jr., John Mll- 3an. It is highly prob able they will co-operate with Sis kiyou county in the building of the road. Tho mlno Is located In Sis kiyou county and is taxed in this county, -but a half dozen former Jackson county courts lent finan cial; asslstanco in the upkoop and tho maintenance, so there is no lack of precedence.
