MARATHONER DIET)
' : i. ' . s :. i k.
MHish iind water Is the diet oo
which long dltance runners must
live, if they, expect, to win' first
places, said Joseph Duve Thomas,
full-blood Chippewa Indian, in Med
ford this forenoon en route to hi
headquarters in Fort Klamath
from t; rail Is Pans, where he had
attempted to be the first one to
register for the annual Redwoods
MKhway marathon from San Fran
Cisco to Grants Pass
However, due to the marathon
not being run for several months.
his registration could not be ac
cepted. Thomas has run no all of Ills
life and at the age of 54 years de
clares he Is still in i.ie pink of con
dition and lust for practise yester
day . ran from Fort Klamath to
Klamath Fulls, a distance of 40
miles, in six .hours. He said he
can run five miles easily in 43
minutes. He keeps in constant
training and has taken part In run
ning races all over the nation.
.When he trains 1-e uses shoes
weighing five pounds each and
when he takes part In a race he
UBes lighter shoes, causing his feet
to feel much lighter and giving
more inspiration to run.
He declares a runner must never
rest long In a race and, most of
all, not sit down in order that the
muscles cannot stiffen. Mush and
water is highly essential as food
on which the best time can be
made. .1
He was accompanied In Medford
by his trainer, John Elf man, and
both left this afternoon for their
headquarters in Klamath county.
Robert Wilson Is his manager. I
