PXGE EIGHT MEDF0RI3 MIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORP, -"oREOOff, WEDNESDAY, MXY 1 , -1929. Help For the Man Who Wants to Build Foundation for Landscaping Is Most Important By The Architect Small limine Srvica Bureau of the United States, inc.' . ; . For a grRt many years, the pub He interested in landucape archi tecture lor small grounds has used the- term "foundation planting," considering it probably the most Important element of the planting ubobt a umall house. Hov jver, as cwt'tnUnl uh it is, tho most impor tant Hem in the landscaping ox wimll liOuae grounds neerns to be not ..so much the foundation plant ing ii- the foundation for the plant ing, une cannot. iaKe a poor piece of grading and make a beautiful tiling out of It, any more than one run mtke a poorly mussed house beautllul by adding decoration. Thi-rc are two elements in plant ing foundations the first , being the o&ntour or chape of the ground, ur;d the second the materia Is out of which this contour or shape is built. Theno two Itema are very little talked of, and yet they are the two mo:;t important elements in the proper landscaping of the small liouix lot. A Common Mistake The house that is slightly above the grade of the sidewalk generally ban tx comparatively flat base of town, r.'hfeh being simple In form, Jc-ndu ltficlf to effective decoration. A common mistake with a lot of this type Is to bring the lawn flat down to the sidewalk with one step or. the side-walk edge; giving a short ragfert piece of terrace about six or eight inches high along the mar gin ol the walk, which is impossi ble to keep well maintained. A house approximately one foot to 18 inches above the street should pcM-rally have an evenly sloped gmdo from the house to th street, ihus providing a flat, simple lawn. If the grade of the lot Is steeper, the contour of the lawn from the house to the street should work out with u reverse curve, coming flat from the house, then sloping down, then oncoming, flat again &l the eldt-valit lino. The common terrace of two, three or four feet in height with a slope of approximately two to ono should bo avoided. Th terrace of this typo under ordinary conditions Is a cheap and unsatisfactory substitute, for n retaining wall, and will always j huvo tills appuarauco. ... When to Uco u Kctulnlnt; Wall 1 When -the ffmiio -from the feoustf to the street becomes go steep that it cannot be handled with a long slope, instead of giving it a steep jjlcj'O, ti retaining vnll that will car rvlhis edgo to the sidewalk is much more natural and attractive. After determining the contour of the wound, it is then necessary to provide proper earth in which to trow plant materials. The urea chould bo vorked to a definite, eraooth subgrade with existing rough material, in tho case of grav H or other poor fill, of at least nine Inches below the finished contour. Arcac vhoro plants are to bo placed sliouid then bo excavated at leant 16 inches to 24 inches below the fin-1 ished contour, and in the case of trees, a good two to two and one half feet. On this subgrade should he j.l:eed ..approximately four. 6r five Inched of clay, and the balance brought up to the final grade with good black or dark Oiovn loam. If the normal subgrade Is clay, It it not, of course, necessary to carry the subgrado ua low as In tho case of a gravelly material. With clay, however, If it Is very stiff, tho ne cessity often arises of draining the planting bed with drain tile, lu or der to prevent the souring of the black soil, whloh is held in the . poo hot of clay Copyright 19J8. The roof may be of varie gated shingles or a solid dark color. Here is a strictly 'modern small home with attached garage. Enclose a ntamped addresned envelope. Q What la the best kind of flooring, tin, tar or what for the balcony of. a porch? . A We recommend metal for the floor af your balcony,- preferably copper for durability and economy. Q Would you advise flue ' linings for a two flue chim ney? -' - v -.. -i A We would for this or" any other kind of chimney, for the pur pose of reducing the fire hazard and controlling the draft Q Wo laid new oak floors In the basement. Now tho floor ing ia badly warped. Please ad vise what caused this and how it can be remedied. A Thia flooring warped because it became damp after laying. Noth ing can be done about It except. to take it up, waterproof the concrete subfloor and lay waterproofed nail ing strips over it, then relay the floor. As It Is your floors will um doubtedly rot In a relatively short time. Q What can be done about squeaking floors? Ours are hard " wood, resting on 2x1 s. There la a sub floor and deadening -between yet there are several ' points that squeak. ' A The trouble Is probably due to inadequate nulling. - Either insuf ficient nails were used or else nails were driven Into sub floors and not into joists. Possibly the flooring strips were not driven closely enough together. The simplest cor rection Is to ace. nail them. Get an experienced loor layer to in spect the Job. v ' v i Q Water baclts into the ' basement through the plumb- ; ln whenever there ia a heavy lain. During this time we can not use the laundry tubs. What can be done .about it? . . A Get your plumber to install a gate valvo 'on the house -sewer, which cau be turned off when theiv is back water pressure. When this valve is closed it will be necessary to arrange other ineanu of taking care of the house dmlnage. This may be done by moaiw of a cess pool. Your plumber will advise you as to specific, methods to be used. Q Our house la of brick and :. tile construction. Inside ploa- terlnc was done without fur-; 1 ring. In eub-jsero weather the houce is very cold in spit of a red hot furr.aca. How much will I have to increase the ra diation In order to get necessary results? How can a remedy beat be arrived at? A There la nothing you can do about your cold walls excepting to furr them. Practically all outside walls of masonry in regions where there are cold winters should be furred. It will not be necessary for you to increase the radiation In your house. The thing to do now is to paint the walls with asphalt or tar, then apply furring strips and over this gypsum wall board. This will save the mess of re-plastering. There la no abort cut Q Please let me know if a gravel foundation is liable to be unstable.
