COUNCIL TO HOLD AIRPORT CREW AT FRUIT MEN URGE
OFF ON SALES OF WORK PREPARING COUNTY COURT TO
CITY BOND ISSUES FOR PLOWING JOB, PUBLISHBOOKLET
The rlly' administration at last
nigilt'si council meeting decided on
a program of rigid retrenchment
on all street and other improve
ments for the coming year.
until the bond, market for munici
pal bonds, especially, improves,
and to subordinate everything in
the way of Improvements, so ns to
make way for the sale of the issue
of xiso.ooo bonds voted recently
for the new airport. There seemed
to be no doubt in the minds of the
city officials that when they were
ready to sell the airport bond Issue
they would have no difficulty In
selling at least at par.
However,' to Insure this, ,'it was
agreed to IssUe ho more bonds for
city Improvements Until the bond
market situation had cleared up.
This , means that , the city water
commlsalonmny have to give up
Its plan to build the, new 10,000,
00( gallons reservoir to' supple
ment the present reservoir, and
that a number of . contemplated
street and sewer Improvements
will also be abandoned for the next
six months or a year. ,
I Only two bids were received at
the council meeting on the pur
chase of 1113,000 worth of bonds
tp pay for the street and sewer
improvements done during the
past 12 months,, one of which, a
little below .par. was from a Port
land bond house, and tho Other, at
par was from the local hanks.
i lh order to g?v rurther consid
eration to these two bids, it was
decided to hold special meeting
at 4 o'clock this afternoon before

- Under ; (City Superintendent
Schofel! 'five' men were u'sy a
the new airport" today .tearing
down the old buildings and fences
on the property preparatory ot
having the ground plowed and
harrowed and otherwise got in
readiness for . leveling later on,
before the actual airport construc
tion is begun.
City Superintendent Scheffel hns
made arrangements .with the
county court to use-the county's
large scarifier in this
work, and the plowing will be
begun as soon as possible, within
30 days, as the city officials fear
that after that time the operation
would be more difficult and
costly.
It was ihtended at first to use
ordinary plows, but on learning
that the county would . loan the
city its scarifier, the plan was
changed, as the scarifier would
not only do the work faster, hut
penetrate! the ground much
deeper. , ' , '
Because only five of the coun-
cllmen were present at Inst night's
meeting, new airport plans were
not discussed, except that the
officials present urged the city
superintendent to rush the work
of plowing the site before the
ground got hard.
The city has already received
over 100 applications for employ
ment, and a large number more
are expected before' airport op
erations are fully under way.
