Small ; . Hoiue Service Bureau of the :; United State, loo. In the modern kitchen we have an ever Increasing number of de vice which need electricity. Toast era, percolatore, beaten, grille, waf fle Irons, cookere and heaters are . a few of the everyday pieces of equipment. Then there are tne tat-sAr nleeas. devices such aa ranges, refrigerators, ventilators and mixers. Day by day are added new. devices run by electric power for making home work more en joyable,, more Interesting. : These ' clearly demand that as home mak ers we must siuuy our jcucnens from mnnv standnolnts when we ere planning them. We need to be rar signtea ana pian not jusi. iur the present but for the future also. - - Mgbtlng Comes First The first consideration la the lighting. Proper lighting is a true hand maiden to the housekeeper. It Is much less expensive to have the necessary outlets put In when the original wiring Is done than after wards. One light clOBe to the cell ing with a globe of a type which does not throw shadows Is often all that l necessary for a small kitchen. ' A 78 watt lamp at least should be used In this place. A re flector which fits close and does not allow dust and gnats to ac cumulate Inside Is most desirable. In a small kitchen that Is longer than It is wide, one central light might bo sufficient. It is always better to be safe than sorry, how ever, and the extra expense of in stalling lights at special vantage points Is not great. If the range . Is off In a corner, a light Is de sirable here.' Pluce it, If possible, so it will at least partially illumi nate the oven. Either a bracket light or a dropllght over the sink Is of great value., Next to be considered are the number of service outlets necessary for equipment We must plan the handiest places to Install them, and for greater flexibility we should use the modern duplex convenience out lets which permit two attachments at once. A duplex outlet will be useful near the breakfast table for the percolator, toaster, grill, waffle iron, or whatever combination of two devices, ons wishes to use at the same time. Have It placed on the wall, high enough so that one can reach it easily, while seated at the Uble. Service Outlets Needed . Kltchen-ald and electrla cookers may be attached to lamp sockets. but It Is better to provide the pro-J per sore or ouueis, ana it is jar more convenient to use them. A duplex outlet may be placed on the wall Just above the end of the right hand dralnboard for this equipment, and another may be installed with the lamp for illumlnatnlg the oven. ' A ventilator IS m boon ' In ','- any kitchen, winter or summer. It not only keeps odors from, tho living part of the house, but drives out fumes and gases carrying particles of grease and smoke, which would ordinarily accumulate on the walls, to say nothing of the added comfort ' that comes from increased circula tion of air. Ah outlet , should be provided for' this, 'and placed In accordance with the recommenda tions of the manufacturer. The electrla refrigerator, though It may not be In the kitchen proper, Is very close ally and should be considered. It. requires wiring do signed to carry the load, and like the electrlo range should be In stalled as directed by the manu facturer. Copyright 1928. This plan, No. 6-A-M, naa been tested and found satis factory by thousands of home builders satisfactory because of Ita convenience and the straightfor ward simplicity of Its planning and because of the beautiful effects that are obtained both inside and out side the house. The many things about the plana which the home owner will not miss are the vestibule, coat closet, fireplace, the open or enolosed porch, the dining alcove and broom closet in the kitchen, and the grade entrance to rear and basement. . It will not take much Imagina tion to visualise the fine spacious ness of living room, hall and din ing room thrown together by large cased openings, though, if desired, the dining room may be shut oft by French doors. The bedrooms In the seoond story have been sltllfully arranged so as to give them about equal Importance.- They have lonsr wall spaces for twin beds, capacious clos ets and, of course, cross ventilation as Doa rooms snould nave. Enclose a stamped addressed envelope. Q I am contemplating building a home this fall. I am ' undecided as to which would '.t be better, hollow' tile or cinder block. Which has the best Insulating quality? Which holds stucco the best? A. Both hollow tile and cinder block make good walls. Stucco will adhere well to either of them. It appears that their Insulating value depends not so much upon whether the block Is of cinders or clay as to whether or hot the mor tar joint Ib broken. Use either of these materials with confidence, whichever costs the least. But, If provision for breaking the horizon tal joint' Is not made, paint Inner surfaces with asphaltio paint, cover with tar paper, then furr and lath as.. usual. . . .... . Q In a recent question and '. answer In this column you said .' when 'someone- - asked about wall board, that it should be stripped. Is this true also of ' gypsum wall boaru? . A. No. Manufacturers of gyp sum wall board have designed a ce mented joint reinforced with fab ric which is adequate, needs no stripping. . '. What can be done to . keep water out of cellar? "' In July and August It Is; dry. but " when the rains come it fills up to about four feet. , . A. Only an Inspection will bring out the facts. It will proba bly be necessary to Install drains Inside and possibly also - outside The basement floor and walls will have to be waterproofed. Take your question to a contractor who is accustomed to building bouses in your neighborhood. Build In accordance with the method used for adjoining houses where base ments are dry. :.!. Q The walls of our house have been papered a number of lmes, but the paper re peatedly falls off in some places. Tell me the way to treat walls before papering so as to eliminate this trouble. A. Probably there are too many courses of paper on the wall and should now be scraped off. A high grade paper hanger' will tell you just what procedure to fol low. It may be advantageous to canvas the wall. . . Q. My basement floor ' Is wet. It does not come through the floor for It has rained two days now and the floor is per- ' fectly dry. - On nice days it - is often wet. It has not been in-very long. Can this be the trouble? . , ,. A. The new construction would not be the "reuse. - It in nrnhnhi that your, floor is cold and attracts moisture. , r- Close the basement windows on hot,, muggy days and see what happens. If the floor continues damp, you will have to find the leak and block it off. -. .. -. . CJ.
