Bandits Kill Merchant. (Copyright by King Features Syndicate, Inc.) Dr. Wynne, New York's health commissioner, says that, with parents co-operating, diph theria could he wiped out. -M- fardinal Hayes, archbishop of New York, in a letter to clergy and laity, urges parents "to adopt scientific means to prevent diphtheria." The cardinal has arranged "through parochial schools to put the means at the disposal of those nimble to patronize their family physician." Public schools should follow the example set. by Curtlintil Hayes in parochial schools. The Schick test, followed, when needed, by "toxiu-aiiti-toxin" treatment, is safe. Fortunately, in this enlifjht cned age there will be no repe tition of ancient prejudice against the use of quinine. , Because quinine was discov- ornrl h' n Pnrhnlip nrtfl mkhipH 1 for a Catholic, Protestants in &3 t- e .1 i l Great Britain refused to have anything to do with the only known specific for malaria. Fathers and mot hem arc in irested in Edwin J. Melhuish, murderer and suicide. He drove liis daughter home from a Con nectient.jgehool, the daughter's J7-year-old friend gomgv-with litem. ' Dropping his daughter at her house, the father drove on and, a little later, after a struggle with the kirl, ho murdered her and killed himself with revol ver and poison, hidden in a book, hollowed out to conceal theiiu This indication of care ful preparation for murder should interest girls who call their mothers "old fashioned, not up to the times." Wise Mrs. Culp, dean of girls in a .Jacksonville, Kla., high school, told young ladies with 'ftsan back" dresses to go home and put on decent clothing. The smi back dresses enables the lovely sunshine to do its work without interruption the full length of the spine, from the cerebellum almost to the os coccyx. . One young- lady says, "My irt.'imma approves and, anyway, Vl I don't think it's any of the jl teacher's business what I wear." A It is part of the teacher's bus 4 iness what the young ladies IX) fj NOT AVKAll. .r ; School girls should be either ; 'dressed or undressed; half ' measures are poor measures. "Randils Kill Merchant" is the headline of a short news dfciry. Two youths entered the tore of Hynuin Friedman, ask ing for neckties. Friedman did not "stick 'em up" fast enough ami the young men killed him. , Other merchants, who may be killed today. or tomorrow, ''will be interested in the state jnent of police offiats that the ; secret drug trade is responsible for at It'ast 80 per cent of mod ern youthful crime. It is too late for Mr. Friedman to be in terested. -Oiorer Whalen. New York's no lire commintioner. tells the Hnlary luh "prohibition is the worst breeder of crime." NACO REBEL ATTACK IS BEATEN OFF Topete's Force Suffers Heavy Loss in Charge On Federal Troops Ameri can Cameramen Watch Battle From Ringside Seats Soldiers Throw Kisses at Enemy. (By Knlitli O. lfrowi! (Associated PreH Staff Writer.) NACO, Sonora, Aitil 6. (Jf) (ienet-ai Kati.sto Tnttfte'it rebel forces were hettten dat-k after n mitss atutek ugalnKt the Xaeo fed eral trenches lotlay. CaMUaltles among General Lucas Oonzttiez' federal troops had not been cheek ed but appeared to be few The rebel attackers, charging across a rocky, sparsely - brushed plateau affording little protection, seem inplv suffered ureater losses. Rebel Infantrymen were seen to fall headlong as they attempted to rush ttie federal wire. By Iolm Thotiuts Bunts AHMoeintctl i'ress Htaff Pholiitfrnpher, ON TUB KIRIN'll LINK, NACO, Sonora, Mexico, April ti JDawif broke with a rattle of musketry and the long awaited battle of Naco was on. Bullets whlszed about ia an un relenting stream. There was a bit of comedy in this tragedy of battle, FederaT Mexican soldiers were yelling and whistling like wild men Three Mexican women, one young, the others elderly, kept running from a house to the trenches near us carrying food, Spasmodically a strident bugle call rose above tlte clamrf the sol diers in trenches fingered their nun at the approaching rebels, some threw klssej. Another bugle call, far what we did not know, and the troops in trenches seemed to care less. The rebel air raid accompanying the Infantry advance attracted no attention in the trenches. The dug in federals kept plugging away firing over the plain in any direc tion that caught the Individual's fancy, , , Tanks Vscd Then came a rebel tank. The federal troops went into wild spasms of yelling. All rifles and carbines pointed toward It, sput tering st eel-jacketed huiieis. The tank back up, then came forward again, like a dg In attack. Again the bugle call and another rattle of musketry at the tank. Then a little yellow pup of a dog .joined the fray. It stood up on j the earthworks barking like mad. liiny nme n iiuuitu a ijuimm. spat tering the earth near it dashed out harking shrilly, and digging and biting at the spot where the bullet raised dust, It was busy chasing them. A band of wild horses was graz ing near the entrenchments. They went wild when the firing started, dashing about with tails high and finally running madly off into the hills. With red flag flying the attack ing rebels approached wtthln 200 yards of the trenches. There were, no dead in the trenches, but sev eral rebel cavalrymen fell off their horses. The entrenched federals laughed and hollered at us as we shot pic tures. With my pictures I walked j back to Naco. Arizona, bullets jwhizzing by. At the border behind j a building were a group of Amer i ienns, soldiers, border officials, I residents,) One buck private I' shouted: "You'd better get outta here or you'll be shooting pictures of j angels," They showed me a fteel I Jacketed bullet which pierced a wall near them.
