rEBFOTJB MATTj TRTPTT?T!, "MEDFOItD, OHEfiONr, WEDNESDAY, APRIL f, 1020. PAGE THREE Help For the Man Who Wants to Build An Electric Wiring Service Now Ready ; . For Home Builders By The Architect' Small How) Servlr. Kureuu of the tfnltoti States, LUtX The Red Seal Plan of electric wir ing is one of service. It has no til ing to sell. Even its advice is free. It is a program devised by the elec trical associations to help home builders to get their houses ade quately wired for service and illum , inatlon. Likeotheroiechaaical installations about the bouse and, as far as that concerned, like the methods of construction slap-dash, thought less, and faulty electrical installa tions must yield before expert opin ion. Too long people have left their electrical Installations to mere guess work with all its attendant Incon veniences and inadequacies. Now we have this great national or&ranization, designed for service and nothing more, to advise home builders. The Red Seal installation may be built from any approved materials for the transmission or conduction of electrical energy. By aoDroved materials we mean those that conform to the requirements of the National Electrical code, or to any local code or ordinance that has requirements in excess of the na tional code. This means' that a Red Seal installation may be wiring in rigid conduit or in armored cable, or, if the local code permits, by the knob and tube schame commonly called open wiring. It does not re etrict the . home builder to the product of any particular manufac turer. Program Economical ' " The Red Seal program is not de signed to encourage home builders to add useless or over-abundant elec trical outlets. On the contrary, It provides only for the minimum re quirements of adequate wiring. These requirements may, be con sidered as a reasonable standard of adequacy and are based on a study of the facilities which should be available in every well equipped home today. 1 - The ideal way for you to secure a good wiring arrangement in your home is tor you to secure a set of blue nrints of the rough sketches , of your house from your architect, and submit mem to ane iocai eiec- trlcal leatnie for a Red Seal layout. Tf Ihft nlan sui?iested meets with the- approval of your architect, he may easily incorporate It in the Jinal working drawings. If you do not have the services of an archi tect or are using plans of The . . Architects' Small House Service Bureau, vour local electrical league can designate the Red Seal layout on a set of your plans in colored pencil. . - Includes Inspection In the event that the layout is ' udonted and a contract signed for ' this work, the next step for the electrical league in your locality is the Inspection of the work as it pro rrRses. The field representative will visit the building, seeing that the outlets go m as piannea ana that the work is done according to " the electrical code of the city hav ing jurisdiction. After the work is completed the Red Seal symbol is placed on the cut-out cabinet and a certificate issued to the building. This certificate is notice to the world that the building so marked ThAB a. nomnlete electrical system and bears the stamp of approval of the industry backing it Also this vmhni will be a tzreat aid xesale of the property or in renting the building or apartment. Red Seal applies only to the dwelling portion of any house or " apartment Copyright 11)29. The Architects' Small House Service Bureau of the United Statc3 Inc. It is straightforward American style without fuss or furbelows, the kind of architecture that gives good space at reasonable cost. At the same time It has fine appearances. More than this, the plan Itself is an honest thing. The rooms are of good size, brilliantly lighted, yet retain fine wall spaces. They turn on each other conveniently and the arrangement is such that con struction is simplified. That's one of the principal ways to keep down costs. In the list of features that makes this plan de sirable may be mentioned a few as follows: A full size coat closet; an inside fireplace, for which the cost of inWion will be less than for one on an oaten wall; beautiful plastered arch between dining room jt and living, room, with recesoeB for books; French , Honrs from both living room and dining room to the .05 tr open porch; the porch itself, if necessary, may oe m , enclosed to make a sun room. - - In addition, mere is a compicioy impi V with cross ventilation; with an entrance to the grade r r and to the basement, a ciosei jor uruu..., &" -Vj ingerawi, . in one line against an outer wall. Since the contractor holds the title to the property, can a per son obtaining judgment against him obtain a lien against the property? A These questions are of a legal nature and should be handled by an. attorney. Undoubtedly you are en titled to know the terms of the con tract into which you are entering, including mortgages, deeds and other contractlonai arrangements. The roofing man says it is the fault of the chimney and not the roof, that the leak comes from inside the c'.imney. Can this be true? If so, what Is the best 'thing to do about it? A It can be true. Water often gets down the walls of a chimney where the coping at the top is not waterproof. It would be well to have a competent builder inspect this. Be sure of the flashings against the chimney Q We have hot water heat If I plaster the basement ceil ing would the floors be colder? A If you piaster the ceiling youf floors will be slightly colder, pro vided there is no Insulating mate rial on the hot water pipes.
