Crater lake Is within three hours' drive of .Medford over the Crater lake highway, a fine oiled gravel road, which follows the Rogue river to Prospect, and from there climhs to the lake by easy grades through the 'splendid forest. Deep blue Crater lake, the sea of sapphire, is one of the beauty spots of America. The 35 mile rim road affords exquisite views of the lake, as well us an excellent pan orama of the Cascade range. On the rim, and In other parts of tho park, are tree tourist camps. Cra ter lake was discovered in 1853 by a party of prospectors who call ed It Lake of Mystery. The In diana held the lake sacred and en dowed it with picturesque super stitions. In Crater I.ako park are the Garden of the Ooda, the Pin :incles, tho Giant Nnt Cracker, Wizard Island and the Phantom Ship, rilaclt hear, deer and other game roam at will in the park and are quite tamo. A loop road system offers nlternato exits and entrances, and all routes to the park pass through beautiful coun try. Crater lake's popularity is manifest by Its increase of 30.91.9 visitors the past season over the previous year, the greatest gain of all national parks. The attendance In 10 weeks being over 1U0.O00. Ashland, 1.909 feet h! ;h, is pic turesquely located in the south part of the valley with tho peaks of the Siskiyou mountains on ev ery side, and Is famous for its min eral springs. Mt. Ashland, or Sis kiyou Peak, nt 7.B62 feet, Ik just south, half in California and half in Oregon. Prom Ashland, route 99 begins to climb the Siskiyou mountains lu graceful loops through beautiful forests of fir, cedar, oal; and ma drono. It crosses the Siskiyou pass at Mt. Ashland, and begins its run of 920 miles down the state of Cal ifornia. At El Centro, route 99 Is con nected by x:nltcd States Highway 80 with San Diego. To the south It connects with a paved road which runs to Mexican on the roxicnn border. From the Inter national border on tho north, the Canadian government has built a paved road joining route 99 to Vancouver. U. C. Thus there is a continuous and practically paved 1 ighway from Vancouver, B. C, to Moxicaii on tho Mexican border. A.
