A NEW YORKER IARGE AT Uy G. D. Seymour. NEW YOUK. Most New York ers have an exasperated notion of the speed nt -which their subway trains run. The underground ex--l)rosscs setdotn attain a speed of more than 30 miles an hour, and are scheduled on n hasls of a 2f mile Ktilt, counting stops every 4U blocks or so. The local trains, ; serving stations six to ten blocks J apart, make about, 1G miles .an hour, counting stopping time, and .almost, never, set un .to aT iVu.-jnlli''' pace between statioiis. , It Is the rush of air through the narrow subway tubes and the noise of the trains, echoing ngainst i the walls, which convey -to riders The great problem of subway engineers is tu lessen the noise of the trains, and to this end 'the I'.rooklyn-Manhattan Transit com pany Is now installing u new type of car, designed to roll along with less din. Fewer Wheels, Less NoLst. The new cars are built tn units of three. The old car was an en tity in itself, with trucks at each end, and .three cars hod six trucks. The new units have but four trucks, with n singlet set support ing the ends of both cars which meet above it. Since t.he trucks are movable on pivots, enabling the trains to go around curves, and since each truck has much loose apparatus attached to it for pur poses of braking, power and safety, lessening of the number of trucks, by n third is calculated to reduce, the noise of trains in proportion. Safety gates tho clanking chains between cars are done awuy with In the new units, mid every rat tling part which can be dispensed with has been taken off. Hut nobody has invented rubber tires for subway trains, much less rubber rails, and the tllln-volced rider .will still need to distribute oar trumpets with his underground conversation. Uefore the producer left New .York for n va cation he usked Hogcrs to say how much he expected, and lingers an swered. "You name tho amount." I Dilllnghnm demurred, nnd Will said, "Well, go ahead and tnke your vacation. Have a good time and we'll settle the little detail or money when you get .hack." Rogers makes aomethlng like SuOO.000 a year. It Is estimated, as a lecturer nnd u one-man show. That Would be $10,000 a week the year around. Al Jolson has gotten $l,Ono a week for two or three weeks In special engagements, but never for an extended run, Eddie" Cantor got 5.unn a week In last season's Follies, the most money Floroni Zlegfrld ever paid a star.
