From the outset our chief interest has been the election of Herbert Hoover as President of the 1'uitcd Stales, because we believe his success will muterially benefit the people, of this section, and every other section of the country.,' We have done what we could to help this cause along, hoping that our efforts would increase his majority in this section of Oregon, ; Regarding local candidates and issues, we have endeavored to maintain a certain attitude of detach jient. The Mail Tribune f lias no axe to grind, no lavontes lo play. As we have explained, partisan considerations, important in a national election, should have no bearing in eily and county contests. The only valid consideration locally is the individual's fitiness for the job. And that is all we have considered in making our recommendations. Voting for a bieal candidate simply because be happens to belong to this parr? or that eliminates individual capability as a political factor. Such u doctrine, cjjjjyjetj to its logical conclu sion, renders improvement in local government impossible, and its deterioration unavoidable. More than thai, such a policy is corruption s greatest ally. What wc arc interested in, and what we hcliuun a maj of the people of Jackson county are interested iQ as far as city and county affairs are concerned, is not the triumph of any political organization, Qt the material and moral betterment of the community, as a whole. O To attain this goal party distinctions should be regarded, not ns an end' in themselves, but merely as aPieans toward an end, party candidates being supported only when Ibey con tribute to this condition. O O . . . VOTE FOR A. W. PIPES Medford has been exeeedinglj lortiinate in 0' high quality of its administrative officials the past 10 ytmrs. Capable and representative business men have served-year in year out with out pay, asking only that satisfaction which conies front the consciousness of disinterested public service well done. Many feared this year would be an exception, particularly regarding theO'fico of mayor, lint it proved not to l. A. W. ipcs, a large property 'owner, heavy taxpayer and capable business man, finally 'consented to make theP'aee. All who know him agree he represents a continuation of these same traditions and ideals which have so consistently distinguished our "biggest little city in the world," as far as its muiiijipnl management has been concerned. '. , The ifsual "alar-uins" arc being broadcast. We arc told Sir. Piped is not well enough kiiow,n, that he is not enough of a politician, etc., etc. Well, our suggestion hfloW who don't know him is to ask him to call, or call on him at his office in the Liberty building. As to bis shortcomings as r. professional poli tician, they arc -to his credit and should be added to his long list of desirablo qualifications. ' ' 8o wc refuse to worry over the outcome. We know some thing about the quality of Medford 's citizenship. We are confi dent the people of this city will this year show the same' good senso and discrimination, rH'TitB tlfe choice of the individual they wish to officially represent them, as the9 have in the past ment at Its close, hoping that his election will contribute materially toward preventing the recurrence of surli a regrettable situation In I the future, j ru! of ortlon regarding Initiative measures: "When in doubt, vote NO!" We hnvo, regardless of party, shown n prorerence for pres ent Incumbents, whero other things aro equal, for we believe that In public, os In prlvale business, an employe who Is giving satisfactory service should not bo, discharged simply because someono else wants the Job. At the beginning of this cam. palgn we said It was going to be a hot one. It hns been, particularly In the local field. OE The Business of Farming Farming is a business. The successful farmer is a business o man. Too often farming is merely a pursuit and the farmer an agri culturist. Raising the crop and caring for the livestock is one thing and marketing to the best advantage is another. The successful farmer must be equipped to do both. 0 The growing can be done individually with machinery and . equipment. But independent and individual marketing is the greatest menace to -the industry. o It also carries with it the highest kind of overhead expense. For best results the marketing end of the farmers' business must be carried on collectively. O O Farmers co-operative organizations are the machinery for suc cessful buying and marketing.
