been so much dissatisfaction in Josephine County because
of .Judge Thomas' allowing the September term to die,

fice, that Judge Thonms has evidently heard it nnd knows
that it is unsafe' to' try any of these defendants because.

The Jackson County October Term.
The same section of the law nlso provides for the
Jackson county term of Circuit ('Hurt. It provides that the
first day of the term shall !eie fourth Mondj in Oc
tober. This was the 2L'nd. On that day Judge Thomas
convened the court and discharged the jury until after
election. WHY? MANY CASES WERE AND ARE
AWAITING T1UAE. "
The League has on file Judge Thomas' letter of Octo
ber 10th. written to ngy who desired to appear before thji
grand jury. At that early date he stated that the Septem
ber term would convene on the fourth Monday in October,
HUT WOULD l'ROUAHLY BE ADJOURNED 1'NTIL
AFTER ELECTION. That the jury was nially Jiosen in
the second week of the term. This statement, 'of course,
was an error because, as everyone knows, the law requires
the grand jury to be chosen from the jurors iiQittendancc
on the first day, and is always so chosen on the first day,
NOR IS IT USUAL TO CHOOSE IT IN THE SECOND
WEEK.
The League is receiving word that numerous political
letters are being received from Judge Thomas, wOtten
frojn his Circuit Judge office, and doubtless by the court
reporter. We feel that this is an unusual activity for one
occupying the office of Circuit Judge. The judicial enn
ons of the American Hat- Association do not tolerate such
practices, the theory being that a judge must not be re
sponsible for any stntcinents that be owes his office to, or
is obligated to any particular persons.
The only wny to clarify this situation is to get this of
ficc out of polities. The only way to get it out of politics,
is to have a change.
