Three of the ihImkIhk (ire believed by officers In rluii'Ke to have csrnped from cuHtody. The fire wan discovered by pris oners, Peter O'lJay of Dayton and Kdward Tillotnon of Toli-do. ae cordhiK to Riiards. O'Diiy and Tll lottton had been llsienlnti In on th radio mid had shut It off about I midnight. Shortly afterward, O'lmy mid. ho Htnellcd wnokn eotnliiK from the south end of the bill Id ink' where the commissary wum located. He opened the commissary floor nnd found the room filled with Binoke. A moment later there was IL burst of flames. O'Uay and Tillolson cried "Fire!" and the alarm was taken up "d echoed through the dormitory where tho 275 prisoners lay sleep Ins. Terrible Confusion. The confusion that followed was terrible, prisoners said. The great room with Its double tlrr of stH bunks was In semi-darkness. Awak ened by the cries, the bewildered prisoners ran about hopelessly. NtrutrKliuK fulihiy with each other between the rows of bunks, siek Iiik to reach doors and windows that were burred. At this Juncture, William O'Mul ley, .it prisoner from Cleveland, be gan his efforts to save the other men that made him probably the hero of the uceiislnu. O'Malley and Tony VarJlio, also of Cleveland, arc employed In the bakery at I he north end of (lie building. When they heard the alarm they rushed to the huge bolted door that sepa rated kitchen, bakery and dining room from the dormitory and at tempted to open it. With the aid pf Mx White, negro, on the dormi tory side of the structure, they suc ceeded In breaking down the door opening an nihtir avenue of escape. O'Malley estimated that K0 pris oners made their way to safety through that route. Later, O'Malley and White ran around to n side window of the dormitory where prisoners si ill were vainly struggling to escape and, lining pkves of pipe as sledges, attempted to break open the win dow, but were unable to do so. Shortly after the fire was dis covered, Captain 11. II. Howell, commanding the guard at the brick plant, was awakened by the shouts. He came out immediately, ami or dered the guards to open all doors. There were five exits from the dormitory. The prisoners who had escaped from the flume-swept dormitory were huddled In the office and in the garage, t'h enter Welch of Cuyahoga eotmly. serving time on a forgery charge, assumed charge of the sil nation until prison of ficials arrived, and finding w ires from the nlant were down, went to Junction City, two miles away, to telephone T. A. Young, super intendent, at his home in Colum bus, lie also called physicians. It wan said that three or four were so severely burned they pruh tibty would die. (irucsonie Task. With the coming of daylight res rue workers found a gruesome task facing them. The dormitory, a temporary ntructure, consisted of a corru gated Iron covering on a wooden frame, erected on a brick fotinda ' tlon six to ten feet high with a wooden floor. Wooden frame ami sheet iron covering had fallen Into the shal low basement made by the fmn dutlon, and with them had fallen the prisoners' beds. Kenrchera from the top of the foundation wall looked down Into a tangle of steel cols, scraps of tdievt Iron, rharrud limber and Wire, and could see scraps of cloth Ing und dark masses of charred bodies here and then1, It wai considered likely t hat 'many of the prisoner reported missing may be among thofo whose bodies lie In the ashes of the flimsy dormitory building. The eight most seriously burned were taken to the penitentiary hospital at Columbus early tiuhiv, tit the brick plant truck. The re mainder of the badly hurt left heir nt 7 o'clock for Columbus by truck. Hcnt from there, Gov. Alfred E.
