And yet the Mail-Tribune has printed no report of any of them. Why 7 Because wc could 'not iet them; Jiiev were de- livered at night, and the Associated Press, for some reason not clear to ns, decided they were jiot important enough to carry over to the dav report which, of course, is the report tho Mail-Tribune receives. For the same, reason wc received no word on the Van Dyke talk although when we heard reports of its great merit, tried to get it. No Smith fanatic wanted that, speech more than we did Thursday afternoon, lor we needed ji front-page leader but it never eaiue. i We make this explanation under no delusion that it will con vince, our Al-coed friends they are getting a s'liiare deil. These complaints will continue until the campaign is over they are all a part of the amusing political psychosis. Hut between extremists on both sides there are a large num ber of fair-minded people, who might conclude where there is so much conversational talk there must be .some justification, if the true facts of the caui- were not pointed out. &o it is to them that this explanation is directed. The Mail-Tribune is opposed to (he election of Governor Smith anil strongly in favor of the election of Secretary Hoo ver. For the first time in 12 years we have found a candidate whom we are for If (0 per cent, anil who arouses in us genuine enthusiasm. We intend to do everything we can in this column to in crease Mr. Hoover's majority in Jackson Courtty. Hut we don't intend and we never have tried either to color our news, ot to restrict it, in favor of one presidential candidate or against another. The news columns of this paper are open to candidates of both the major parties under precisely the same conditions. We admit there have been practically no Smith communications printed since the campaign started, but that has certainly not been our fault. Xo Smith communications Jiave been received. One of the most extraordinary features of this extraordinary campaign has been the universal reluctance of Smith support ers tq. get into print or in any way unfurl their colors to tho public view. We know scores of ardent Smith supporters, but not one of them will mark a Smith ballot that is a straw one not one will write-a communication for publication endorsing 1 heir can didate, and not one-half of one per cent of them will even wear a Smith button. rerhapsJJrts little announcement will bring sonic of them out in the open. We hope so. For the more general the dis cussion on both sitles the better for all concerned. The one sitled character of our letter box the past few weeks, for ex ample, has been no more pleasing to us than it has to our Smith sonian friends. Hut, lo repent, no pro-Al communicants would conic in. To return to our original thesis, however, the Mail-Tribune has not discriminated against (inventor Smith in its news col umns, at any time in the past, and does not intend to tin so in the future. Such a procedure would not only be opposed to our long established policy, but it is, to our way of thinking, absolutely iinneeessarv. We signed tikis statement under prolest, notwithstanding the fact that the statements in there were true, but in our opinion rather misleading. Tho fact of tho matter is, we felt i that we did not receive the assist ance from Judge Thomas relative to the matters slated in this so- called partial report that we were entitled to receive and wc feel that ' for the public to understand this, the juilga should print this partial report; that without this so-called partial report Dem; printed tne public Is In the dark as to what tho controversy Is, If you may call It a controversy, is all about. Fur thermore, in the statement submit ted to us, there was no heading "Po ll ical Trap," like appeared In a lo cal newspaper headline, nor was there any heading "OosbIp Nailed." Tho grand Jury stuted to the judge that they felt that this was, In a measure, nn attack upon MtB. (Jrlve, nnd they should not be re quested to sign It nor should It be used by the judge. But, upon Ills insistence thnt they sl;n the same, they finally did so after in a meas ure being coerced. One of them at least not Blgnlng until he had spent two hours with the judge. Personally, 1 do not think that we should have been requested to sign such a statement, and I do not think the judge should use it for political purposes. I feel that Mrs. Grive did her best, as did all the other Qrand jurors, in performing a very difficult task, and that the attacks made upon the jurors by Pert Anderson and this request from Judge Thomas to sign such a statement are wrong and uncalled for.
