Thornewill, well known poultry
raiser, was found dead in a pool'of
blood in the kitchen Of her ranch
home here early today. Several
feet away was a high powered
rifle.
Investigating officers believe she
was murdered. Undersheriff Low
ell Koundtree found Iter pajnma
chid body in the kitchen and the
telephone lying on the floor. A
few minutes earlier u woman's
voice had gasped for help over the
telephone and the Santa Cruz tele
phone operator had notified the
sheriff.
Is, A. Thornewill, who was be
Hexed to be the woman's husband
told the. sheriff he was not married
to her although she had used his
name. Her name was Com Meade.
Thornewill saitl. He lives 'in a
house in town while the ranch Is
on the outskirts of Santa Cruz.
Koundtree found a note at the
ranch which had presumably been
written some time ago. It asked
that the "Meade H icy do company
of Hi rih Ingham" be notified In
case of accident. Although the
sheriff could not point to any
direct motive for murder, he dis
counted the suicide theory. He
pointed out that the woman could
not have crawled mure than six
I feet from the rifle had she shot
herself.
Thornewill was not held by tho
i police. He admitted he had been
to the ranch earlier In the night
and said he ami the woman had
quarrelled but that he left her In
good spirits.
The woman had won many poul
try prfy.es throughout California
and was well known at poultry
shows and fairs. Authorities are
I continuing the Investigation.
