The Packard Motor company lias an nounced the successful testing of an oil burning airplane motor, the first of its kind ever developed. The demonstration was made here yesterday before a group of aeronautical engineers in a regula tion Stinson-Detrolter monoplane, piloted by AValter Lees and Cnpi. L. M. Woolson, the latter designer of the engine. The motor,' which company of ficials claim marks a revolutionary step in the development of air plane power, is a radial air cooled type and develops J0U horsepower. It involves use of the Diesel prin ciple of oil for fuel and eliminates gasoline, ignit ion systems, carbu retors, spark plugs and other parts usually regarded as I r o u b I e in alters. , The engine derives power by fir ing from .eoppression In the cylin ders, the Diesel action that hereto fore has been applied "illy In ex tremely heavy engines for power plaivts and boats. Aside from the sonipiicily and ruggedness uf de sign, the engine has fewer purls than the 'lightest gasollin- engines now in use.
