Undulant Fever A New Disease in Oregon (Courtesy Dr. L. D. Inskeep) When, You Demand GOLD SEAL Products You Get The Purest and Best by Every Test' ' Them have recently come to the attention of the State Hoard of Health several cases of undulant fever, a disease hitherto unknown, or at least unrecognized, in this stale. The term undulatit fever is applied to this disease because it is characterized by waves of fever lasting a week or so alternating; with periods of several days when there is no, or little fever. Nndu hint fever is also known as Malta fever, because the disease was first observed on the Island of Malta in the Mediterranean sea. There, as well as in other parts of the world where Malta fever occurred, hu man infection whs traceable to the use of coat's milk. In this coun try undulant fever has been largely contracted by the ttse of milk from cows that had prematurely lost their young, a condition known as i "contagious abortion." The lew cases discovered In Oregon drank milk from cattle that were known to be aborted. The win eaustng. Malta fever. Bacillus Mclitensis. can bo distinguished only with the greatest difficulty from the genu tausiug contagious abortion, bacil lus bortus. I'ndulant fever has often been mistaken for typhoid fever, par ticularly where the disease hRS been of a milk type. The number of cases of undulant fever has increas ed remarkably in tho I'nited States hi the past year because of correct diagnosis of the disease. The chief symptoms of the dis ease are loss of appetite, loss of weight, marked weakness, head ache, chills, fever, profuse sweat ing, and frequently pain in the joints. The average duration of the illness from the onset to con valescmce is three months, but cases lasting a year or longer are not at alt rare. Tho mortality Is very low. The gorni may be found in the blood stream and in the urine. In suspected cases blood for agglutination test Rhottld be submitted to tho State Hygienic I.uhoialory. All cases or undulant fever should be reported to the State Hoard of Health. Tho pa tient should be kept in modified (Hiai-antinc. Discharges should be disinfected, and all sanitary pre cautions employed In the control of intestinal diseases should be ap plied to undulant fever. The existence of undulant fever In Oregon is another argument for the pasteurization if milk. In rural communities where pasteurizing plants are not available, milk from infected cowg should bo boiled be fore drinking.
