The favorite to win the contest is tin- Salem urbanization with 3.. pieces, which fur throe years has won the championship ami which will attend the national convention this year at San Antonio. Tex. Its members wear elaborate uniforms ami is well remembered by local citizens .who saw the corps take part in the drum corps contest last year at the fairgrounds during the Jubilee of Visions Realized in Sep tember. The liend corp;. which won sec ond place last year, is expected to hid high aain for honors this year with its '1Z pieces and its West J'oint cadet uniforms of blue and white. The Itoseliuri; Ulue Devils, iu cludinK HI members, who appeared here during the jubilee last year, are expected to show up K..nd in tliis year's routes!. lis members wear military uniforms with tin : hats. Another corps thai is expected lo place high Is the 1'ortland post entry with 33 pieces. It has trained for several months for this contest ; and is determined to take the first award back to Portland. Us mem- hers wenr red and blue military uniforms. One of the new corps to take ' part In the contest is Corvallis with 25 members clsil in uniforms the nature of which has not been learned by local convention offi cials, it took part in the iubilee ' last year but at that time it hast acquired no official dress. A dark horse Is the Coos Itay corps, which was also In Medfnrd last year durlntr the Jubilee. At that time the corps, with its 'Z 1 . members, wore pirate and sailor , uniforms, but this year will appear in new black and white military ; suits with silver hats. This corps is expected lo supply a surprise of the contest. Another new corps to take part ' Is Astoria with n pieces. The na-' lure of its uniforms also lias not ; boon learned. The third new eorps is that of the Enterprise post with ' l(i members and like Astoria, will make ils debut In .Med lord. Perhaps having the nattiest and ! most pleasing uniform of the visi- tors is Hood Itiver with military ' suits of green and white with gold : hats. The corps has 'I'H pieces, ; The Eugene corps, here last Sep tember, is also on hand this year with its H.'t members anil uniforms , of red and black. Kn stern Oregon is well repre sented by the drum corps of Uaker j and I,a Orande, the latter with 2'A i pieces and the former with 21 ; pieces. The fat (ininde drum : players and bugle blowers wear blue and gold uniforms. The Uaker' drum corps was established only two years ago and is rated high. Last but not least is the -Medl'oid corps with 21 members and mili tary uniforms of l-'rcneh blue. The l"cal hoys have been holding week ly practices for months and expect to gain a place near tile top. Its drum major. Lloyd Williamson, last year won the state champion ship as the best drum major and h expected to do the same again in the present contest. i The largest American Legion band In the world, organized only this year at Albany, will make its first official appearance ot the convention. It consists of so ph-cca with all the players In natty uni forms with tin hats. The official state American Legion band from Shci'hlan has also arrived and con sists of 4D pieces. It has been or ganized for four years ami for the ast three years hns been the offi cial band of the state department. Three buy scout drum corps from Toledo, Cottage drove and Tillamook have arrived and are takinc part In the convention fes tivities in addition to Hie local U.ys drum corps which was oi-ganizcd in Med ford a short lime ago. The Tile Dunsmuir American I. ion drum corps is also in Medfoid and enine here because of the prohibi tive distance for it to travel to the California sl;Ue convention at Stockton. All members oi the LvKiuu drum corps ami hands who are in Med foid this week intending the con vention are extended the courtesy of lree swimming in the Natnto rium plunks, according to an an nouncement made to the conven tion commission by Kmerson Mer rick, manager of the Nat.
