CROOKS Thoro tiro two Ecnonil ways of building the Home, one is to lot the construction out under ono con tract and the other is for the owner to handle the niuuaKoiimnt of tho work on a labor and mute rial basis. Hotli ways have thoir advantages. Tho inexperienced hulldor should always build under coutraei. The best method of proroduro Is to have a complete set of plans and specflleations and invite several contractor!! of Rood reputation to submit bids. In doing this a fair price for the work can he arrived at. It is well to remember that the low figure in not always the cheap est and the character of the con tractor should always he known, In building a home on a labor and material basis or segregated bids as it is often called, often a great flea I of money Is saved, hut unless the owner can afford to give tho work his undivided attention he is liable to entail unite a little extra expense. This method is often used by giving it to a con tractor and a certain fee given him for supervising (he work. In either case tho plans should he most complete, having every thing set forth in them and noted in the speclllciitioiiH. Do not bniBt to word of mouth hut attend to everything In writing uh it Is only fair to lint li parties involved. Your local Lumber Denier will be pleased to givo you any help in checking your needs before the contract is, entered into. ; Should there be any changes de sired during the coutho of con-1 st ruction, the change should be ' thoroughly discussed and the price tj cell led upon and set forth in vriting and mude pin t of the con tract. The extras if any uro then added to the price or in caso of an omission It Is deducted. Never, trust to memory, for hy doing this j many a homo hus suffered on ac count of misunderstandings be-j tweeu the owner and contractor. I Tho contract should always he drawn up, on a standard form, which may be obtained from any book store nt n very sni.ill price. The signed contract should he ut tached to the plans and specifica tions and one copy recorded with the city or county recorder before any work lias heon started. These, being on record become nn offlelul copy In etise of any disputes. (Continued 'next week) m:m4 &8mmm. Ml.-.jj.-m lit-' mm : -fe DE.51GN-G2I ziiT --v time ioom I I'l-1-""' ij"-" ! fl Uik too. ' M "BUTTRESS ENCLOSES ENTRANCE COURT" Hore Ih a Home that Is interest ing from every angle. Tho design Is unique to say tho least, yet pleasing in every detail. Tho fire place has taken a prominent place in completing tho exterior treatment. The floor arrangement is some what different from the usual run of houses and Is most convenient. A center hall connects every room in the whole plan, a feature seldom found. -The Living Room Is largo and has a beamed ceiling. The floor of this room is two risers down from the Reception Hall. In doing this a higher ceiling height is attained and the entire balance. of the room is greatly enhanced. Directly off the Living Room is a Music Room. This Home would make an ideal place for a doctor or any profes sional person opera ting .from his own home. With very little change at the plan the Mush: Room could bo converted- into a Reception Room and the front Red Room into an offif-e, The office quarters would he completely neparatcd from the balance of tho house vot a part of It. The plans on this Home may be seen at tho oll'lco of most Lumber Dealers. Should your denier not hp acquainted with this Rorie;; of Homes, tho plans may be obtained from the office of the designer, D. M. Crooks, Thayer Building, Oak land, California, for tho nominal sum of $l.".oo. This price includes threo acta of plans and specification:!. "Questions That Arise in Building" We have a wax finish over our woodwork and why should dark streaks and spots appear through the wax on the case lugs and door stiles? This Is no doubt caused hy your builder using an air-dried ma terial instead of a kiln-dried finish and the heat is causing the natural pitch which still re mains in the wood to appear . through the filler and wax. For wax finish great care should 'o exercised in selecting thor oughly kiln-dried materials, How do you make a partition sound-proof? This Is done most successfully and economically by the use of a stnggard partition. To build a Btaggard partition 2x0 bottom and top plates are used and two rows of studding arc used, ono on each side of the plates m that they alternate and that when lathed and plastered there is no direct connection between the two surfaces of tho peti tion. Hv lining this type of parti Hon, sound vibrations are not conducted by niOMis of direct cont.icf. ; WASHINGTON, July 3 0.
