I'p to this noon no fires had de veloped in the Crat"i National for est, but then- were two fires on stale lands in the valley yesterday, hoi h tti which owing to prompt discovery and .intelligent fire fight ing were reported under control this morning, but are being patrol led today. The gest fire was one which started about ii p. in. above Alc Leod across the river from the Pa cific highway, along fringe of tim ber, which burned over un acres of brush, etc. before it was gotten under control about 7 o'clock this morning by a crew of fire fightei s sent out fro in Aledford hiclud ing a SMUad of California Oregon Pow er company employes, under the direction of liwight L. J'hipps. state fire warden in this district. This fire was thought to have been started by a fisherman! as a torn empty lohjcco pouch was found near where it started. The other fire, which is also believed to have been -a Used by a ra re less smoker tossing a Hgaret stub along the road, broke out about f. p. ui. between Cob-man and Oriffin creeps, ji ixi burned over an area of ten acres before it was brought under control at 7 p. m. by a crew of volunteer fire fighters from PI nix and lhaL Vstiict, and Slate l-'lre Warden l.
