What Governor Smith Says About
Salogn and What He Has Done
In the message which Governor
Smith sent to the democratic: na
tional convention at Houston, re
pudiating lt utterances on the
liquor question and declaring his
purpose M being a candidate on a
platform of his own ho far as that
issue was concerned, he used the
following language:
"I am satisfied that without re
turning to the old evils that grew
from the saloon, which years ago I
held, and still hold, was and ought
always to be a defunct institution
In this country, by the application
ot the denmeratlc principles of
local seli'-governinent and slates'
rights, we can secure real temper
ance, respect lor law and eradica
tion of the existing evils."
In an editorial, printed the day
after the convention and after tiov
ernor; Smith's pronouncement bail
been made public, the t'hristlan
Science Monitor said of him:
"He Is entitled to the vote of
every citizen who would reestablish
the open sale of liquor in the laud
and caf back the saloon with all
its infamies."
The charge is made that the
Monitor ignored the governor s de
nunciation of the saloon, and his
assurance that it "was and ought
always to be a defunct institution
in ibis country." That this charge
is baseless will be clear to anyone
who 11 st inly with even reason
able rare the legislative record of

of Assemblyman Smith was in op

was ordered on the slim chance
that he might be alive.
An expert on international law
said that it offered no hindrance to

tered. He suggested that Sweden
might propose a Norwegian trial of
some sort, since the Spitsbergen
archipelago is under the jurisdic
